It was only a matter of time before Ron DeSantis’ rising star ran into the unmovable object of Donald Trump’s will to continue to dominate the GOP.
A spate of recent news stories has focused on the proto-feud between the past president with future ambitions, and the protégé who rode his endorsement to victory in a Florida GOP gubernatorial primary and has big ambitions of his own.
The scale of the clash shouldn’t be exaggerated — so far it mostly consists of muttering from Mar-a-Lago, and speculation that both men could end up throwing their hats in the 2024 ring. Obviously, it’s also insanely early. No one can be sure that either Trump or DeSantis will run for president two years from now. If Trump decides to make the plunge, it’s far from clear that DeSantis will. If DeSantis runs, in a field with or without Trump, no one can be sure he won’t flame out like past contenders who were highly touted early on. By the time the New Hampshire primary rolls around, it could be a battle between, say, J.D. Vance and Larry Hogan, given how wrong early prognostications have been in the past.
But the Trump-DeSantis storyline is inherently alluring, considering the chances of a collision between two men who have been allies and the possibility of the subordinate in the relationship, DeSantis, eclipsing the figure who helped to elevate him into what he is today. Whether that ever happens is unknowable, yet the spat is revealing nonetheless: Some version of what DeSantis represents has the greatest odds of coaxing the party away from Trump and forging a new political synthesis that bears the unmistakable stamp of Trump while jettisoning his flaws

Actually a bit from the National (CIA) Review editor offering standard uniparty thinking. Just confirms that they are busy trying to line up “conservative” Trump alternatives for their slate of GOP presidential primary candidates. They have long done this, but as intended losers to the McCain/Romney/Bush style alternatives. This go-round they know they are going to have to have populist MAGAesque-appearing candidates in there with the plan for one of them to be the ultimate nominee and possible or likely president.
Some are, some aren’t. The ones that are, are doing it strictly because they believe Desantis has a legitimate shot, not because they align with him on a lot of the issues, because they don’t.
That was the core point of the article, which has been made by others - Donald Trump’s main weakness is to someone running against him from further to the right. And if you look at the DeSantis agenda, and his accomplishment sheet, that’s the territory he’s staking out. You can see it starting to take shape in the recent back and forth between them over boosters, and shutdowns. The ones not so evident yet are things like gun restrictions, and LGBTQ support. This doesn’t mean that they are on an inevitable crash course, and I certainly hope they are not, especially right on the eve of DeSantis’ re-election campaign. But it would be hard to argue against DeSantis being more conservative, if you actually put their core principles down on paper.
Gee...already. Politico telling us who/how can beat Trump. Nice guys there. Democrats in general, too. So we’re gonna keep seeing this kind of made up trash until they have something better...
Rich Lowery…the girly boy.
I’ll pass on reading this article.
He is always pretending to be a conservative, but is a squish rino.
I cannot stand this person.
Trying to drive a wedge between their prospective voters...
When watching/reading/hearing the “news” (aka propaganda), it is always good to ask yourself; “how are they trying to manipulate me to think?”, because there always an agenda in play.
The Left and Deep State desperately want to create internal conflict on the Right.
Rich Lowry is a dork.
What a trouble maker that Lowry is.
What a POS.
I guess we now live in a world of daily Trump v. DeSantis articles. I guess they get clicks.
