Oddest song of 1963 had to be ‘Sukiyaki’ (not its real name). Japanese language. I think it hit US #1.
Singer died in the big Japan Airlines crash in 1985.

“but honestly they had 2 incarnations and frankly I like the original better’
You and I definitely are in agreement on this. I had little use for most all of it after Rubber Soul. It’s All Too Much Being the one exception. If they had begun their career with Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da they could have never have sold that garbage. They were riding on their name.
Stones stayed strong by never straying far from their roots. Maybe my favorite Stones recording:

I Look Up as I Walk (Sukiyaki) was a hit in Japan in 1961 and crossed the Pacific two years later to soar to the top of the US charts.
Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport was another oddity from 1963. In the summer of that year, everyone was playing and singing this.

I had fun last time you did one of these, so count me in!

“Sukiyaki” has been covered many times, including more successes over the decades.

You did a similar poll a few years ago. Did something change about the 1950s while I wasn’t watching?

Yes the ‘50s was done at the start of the scamdemic.
No, nothing really changed…except my approach will be different, a bit. Whereas before we started with 70 pieces, here we’ll start with 100. So a few more pieces will be added.

“Sukiyaki” has been covered many times, including more successes over the decades. The Blue Diamonds, a duo from Indonesia that were popular in Europe, also scored with the tune in 1963. In their English-language rendition, Sukiyaki is the name of a girl. The German version, with completely different lyrics, is actually about eating sukiyaki, as is Yvonne Carre's version, also from 1963.

I started listening to music in the ‘50s I did, too.
