Exclusive Eyewitness Recounts Shooting on Alec Baldwin Movie Set: One bullet ripped through both victims

It was one bullet that discharged from the prop gun on the Santa Fe movie “Rust” and killed the director of photography and wounded the movie’s director.

An eyewitness on set tells this column that the bullet went straight through the body of DP Halyna Hutchins and into the clavicle of the film’s director Joel Souza.

Very quickly the set was locked down. Ambulance and helicopters arrived. Hutchins and Souza were sent straight to the hospital. Hutchins died en route in a helicopter.

On the ground, Baldwin was in shock but composed. He kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun.” Our eyewitness said Baldwin kept saying “In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.”

“A hot gun” means a gun with real ammunition.

Baldwin, not knowing the fate of the victims, was taken immediately to the hospital. “He had no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead.”

There are reports that the crew was target shooting with the gun (or guns) a few days before. If true the armorer, if he or she knew, is going to jail.

Unless, of course, you just happen to have a great way to kill someone who was getting on your nerves.

I think there is more to the story then is being told. First was he out shooting as part of a scene, or was he acting up. And as this going to head live ammunition in it, how could it even be considered a prop? He should be charged with manslaughter until proven otherwise.

https://www.npr.org/2021/10/22/1048295916/props-gun-death-injuries-rust-movie-set-rare

“When I’m doing a training session with a performer, my main guideline, the heartbeat of the conversation, is to make sure that they are treating any weapon — whether it’s a bladed weapon or a firearm — as if it could potentially kill somebody. And those are usually the words I use,” said UCLA’s Williams. “It’s a serious situation and everyone’s got to be on their game.”

Hollywood adheres to Safety Bulletins, written and distributed by the Industry-Wide Labor-Management Safety Committee, for standards on weapon and prop safety, as well as other rules.

In the first bulletin addressing firearms and the use of blank ammunition, the document notes prominently: “TREAT ALL FIREARMS AS THOUGH THEY ARE LOADED.” It goes on to say live ammunition is to never be used nor brought onto a set.

Lots more responsibility needed by all when you are play acting with guns Mr. Play Actor.

It was NO ACCIDENT. He purposefully pointed the weapon and pulled the trigger expecting it to discharge. NOT AN ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE. 100% negligent discharge!

It was completely NEGLIGENT and someone died at your hand, Mr. Play Actor. Who do we charge with negligent manslaughter?

The gun was in his hand and he pulled the trigger....he fired in the direction of people on the set...how is he not responsible. Whether or not he meant to injure anyone is irrelevant when it comes to responsibility...I believe the term is reckless endangerment!!!

Pray for all involved. The irony is strong here. Anti gun Hollywood can’t make a movie without a gun. I hope Baldwin learns humility though it looks like he was quick to take a defensive tone.

It was a real firearm. My kids, way before their teen years, were taught to treat all firearms like they’re loaded. Even the four year old got it. Having said that, on movie sets, live ammo is used rarely and under strictly controlled conditions. They usually have a firearms expert handling everything, including ammo. Every gun guy knows you don’t hand a loaded firearm to a child or a moron. Every person in the movie industry is on notice that Alec Baldwin is a total moron. Lots of blame to go around.

I sincerely doubt than anyone, untrained or not, would fail to recognize the difference between a live round and a blank. You just have to ask, who brought the live rounds onto the set? Who placed live ammunition with the prop supplies.

You mistake what I meant by "Prop guns don't have bullets". I'm 72 and have been shooting since I was 14. I also reload my own ammunition. My statement was related to the presence of live ammo in the building, not what it was doing in the weapon. Now, that clearly leads to "what was it doing in the weapon"?

Maybe old hot-head set it all up as a plausible accident.

Alec Baldwin has killed more people with a gun than I have with mine.

If he was “joking around” and pointed the gun at them and fired, manslaughter is an appropriate charge. If the gun was loaded with an actual bullet, everyone responsible for checking the gun should be also be charged.
How does a dummy round go through a person and then seriously wound another?

He should be charged with manslaughter until proven otherwise.

Charging somebody "until proven otherwise" seems completely opposite of "innocent until proven guilty". Even for folks we don't like.

Interesting that the movie "Rust" is all about an accidental killing.

Let's ponder this a bit.

Great points. Indeed you have to wonder how the heck live ammo got on the set. Perhaps we’ll find out the truth...

Every firearm rule includes not pointing a gun at anyone unless you plan to shoot them. Except on a movie set, you're supposed to be pointing guns at people. And they're constantly picking up guns, sometimes multiple ones, and firing them all in the same scene.

I don't like Baldwin, but whomever handed him a gun loaded with live ammo instead of blanks is at fault here.

Ban Hollywood. If it just saves one life, it will be worth it!
