59 Million Americans Prohibited From Buying High-End Dell Gaming PCs
Understanding Politics ^ | 07/27/21

Aproximately 59 million Americans spanning five states can't buy Dell's high-end Alienware brand desktop PCs "due to power consumption regulations."

When one goes to the Dell Alienware online configurator to buy an Aurora R12 gaming desktop, a special notice appears which reads:

This product cannot be shipped to the states of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington due to power consumption regulations adopted by those states. Any orders placed that are bound for those states will be canceled.

I have a 6 year desktop pc with a Gigabyte motherboard and 32gbs ram and Win7 pro and a 2tb ssd. It runs very fast and beats the stats for the expensive pc that Dell is offering.

"Dell bought Alienware in 2006"

I don't know HOW I missed that, besides me being in Japan. Never could afford an Alienware (always wanted one though) anyway :P

Earlier this month I bought the Dell G7 7700 gaming laptop, which is essentially a mid-range Alienware laptop, but it is less expensive than the Alienware branded ones. Unless a user plays very high end resource-demanding games, the Dell version is more than good enough for video games and all other uses.

Yeah, I have ran into problems shipping here (Hawaii) several times :\

(Especially if the item has Lithium Batteries)

A laptop does not use much energy.
The state should not be able to do this. Build another power plant if more energy is required.

The article, which is probably rubbish, mentions an kwhr/year limit. Umm, that is cumulative energy consumption. So, the prohibition assumes that I would run it for how long? How many hours per day? Unless a user exceeds that assumption they can’t violate the limit.
I call BS. This has to be Dell advert scam. Even regulators out here in CaCaLand wouldn’t promulgate such a reg so full of holes.

More insanity. PC’s causing global electricity shortage....

Such concern about energy efficiency appears to be appropriate given the findings of a 2015 Semiconductor Industry Association report [PDF] that, given a benchmark system of 10-14 Joules/per bit transition, “computing will not be sustainable by 2040, when the energy required for computing will exceed the estimated world’s energy production.”

Does the Dell PC use up more electricity than a Tesla?

I just built a blindingly fast gaming PC for my youngest Son. Cost a little over five grand. Should last him around 12 years.

The graphics card was the killer.

It would be smarter to build it yourself or get someone to build it for you. I think NewEgg will do that

My cousin was married to a guy in the Navy and for a while when they were first married they were living in Japan. She had her parents ship them folding lawn chairs, I guess there was nothing like that there.

Hmmm...

Someone can send me the $$$$ and I’ll buy two and send them one (from MD)...

Although, not sure I want to go back on a vow I made a couple of decades ago to never own a Dell again...

I was thinking it was a laptop (that is what I know Alienware for).. As for desktops, I do build them myself. It used to be cheaper to build them yourself, but I guess the businesses caught on :P

Definitely lots of heat.. I am running an Asus TUF A15 with 2 graphics cards, and I switched out the 1TB SSD with 2 2TB SSDs and the WiFi 5 card with a WiFi 6 card... It also came with 2 fans built in (1 for each card).

I have it sitting on a 5 fan cooler. If I ever need a heater in the winter, this would do the trick ;)
