The Cherokee sided with the British in 1776 and again in 1812. They and the rest of the hostile tribes were accordingly sent to Oklahoma. The many tribes that sided with the US in both wars were not marched west and many still have their tribal lands.
One reason was to be able to vote in the tribal elections. He has 2 ancestors who were chiefs - one recent and one way back. They also arrived at the “Indian Nation” on the trail of tears.
Well, I wasn't there, so I can't say for sure. But, it has been the story told in our family. My Grandmother sure LOOKED like an Indian. They were poor, hard-working people. Not pretentious in any way. I'm not sure they would have anything to gain from such a story.

The rest of the report matched well what our history has shown. Mostly English on my Dad’s side, and Spanish on my Mom’s. All that was missing was ANY Native American.
You dont need that much of a sample for a PCR test. Also folks should know 23 and me does not actually run the tests. That is done by quest or lab Corp (can’t remember which at the moment). 23 and me just runs the database. Also I think what they are using now is a buccal swab they source from dna genotek.
But don’t ask me, I know nothing about it ;-)
My niece and her Dad had this done. The native American was less than they expected. However, when the Asian and Hispanic was added in, that made the total correct.
They were told that a lot of Native Americans have Asian and Hispanic in their ancestry.
Because he never sent it in.

One thing my DNA journey has taught me is that prior generations weren’t nearly as chaste as I thought they were, they just hid it better!
23&Me don’t accept swabs.
They send you a plastic test tube type container that needs to be filled to a certain line (approx. 20cc’s), closed and shook to mix it with a preservative.
If your sample isn’t enough they’ll send you one more to try again.
