The survivors retreated to their camp where they fled in the middle of the night, carrying mostly their prized loot. The next morning, Charles was deeply concerned that his enemies were setting up an ambush, trying to get him to march downhill to more open fields.

The man that rid Europe of Islam (Charles "The Hammer" Martel and built the foundation for Charlesmagne. This is not a very in depth article. But one of those battles that could have possibly altered the history of Western Civilization.

I agree on not very in depth.
“The Muslim conquests were not inherently about religion, especially seeing as the conquerors allowed freedom of religion in conquered territories,”

Today’s Moslems in France only want to complete the mission of their forebears that Charles Martel stopped. The French military officers who have written their letter to the French President warning of the eradication of modern France by Moslems, are the true descendants of Charles Martel and are carrying on his mission of defending their country from a foreign religious invasion.

It certainly did but the French learned nothing from it. Look how they kowtow to the Muslim horde invasion.

Haha! Right! Well, France is about to have another storming of the Bastille. Macron (leader of the 2nd Vichy government)has pretty much been told he will be kicked out by the military and 70% of French expect a civil war in the very near future. As much as I love to hate the French, they can kick some @$$ when necessary. The French Resistance in WW2 showed some true juevos. On a side note, I have two neighbors, one hails from Dover England and the other from Normandy. Their houses are next to each other with no English channel in between.lol. Luckily they are both retired elderly women but they still snarl at each other. I always though the French thing was uniquely American. After spending time in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy, well, let’s just say, it ain’t just Americans.

Technically, the Franks were more of a Germanic people than what we know today as "French". Lots of centuries, lots of change - though in this case it ends up about the same... the Germans have also been inclined to play footsie with the Muslim world since before WWI. I really don't see the allure, but many German and Austrian cities are now filled with the same sort of street vendors that you might find in Ankara.

Ah well, at least France honors my namesake with an annual fencing tournament held in his name. When you compare fencing foils and battle axes, it sorta seems like a deliberate insult.

Oh, everybody hates the French.

They can fight like bastards, though - just ask the Algerians.

Living in Europe you become to realize the large Turkish population in Germany. As I understand it with the large male population loses of WWI and WWII, many Turks were “imported” into Germany to help with the rebuilding of the nation in the 60’s.

You mean the French didn’t bother to create any large monuments to Martel? I honestly don’t know. Or did their social justice warriors tear them down? lol. I get in and out France as fast as possible. Unless its on the south coast. In which case I let the expense account flow :-)

London is full of monuments made from melted down, captured French cannons.

A couple years after Sept. 11, I noticed that academic sources that were in any way critical or investigative of the origins of Islam were deprecated and stopped appearing.

For example, in the 1970s, there were serious archeological findings that dated a period of social, economic, and political unrest in the Arabian peninsula just around the time of Mohammed's (however you like to spell him) rise. Those articles are hard to find, even on J-STOR.

Coincidentally, there were new articles that emphasized the wonders and liberality of Islam, especially it's loan of tolerance to Europe, which the evil Francs rejected at Tours.

Seriously, I've seen articles that purport that the Umayyad invasion of France was just a friendly, daytime picnic adventure north of the Pyrenees, no harm meant (despite the documented plunder).
