In the name of what progressives refer to as “equity,” Virginia is planning to eliminate all accelerated math courses before 11th grade.
On a personal level, as a person who always took the highest level math classes that were available during my entire schooling, and who always scored in the 99th percentile on standardized math tests, I think this is a horrible idea.
On a practical level, as a person who wants bridges that don’t fall down, I think this is a horrible idea.
And on an intellectual level, as a person who knows that Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” was written as a warning, and not an instruction manual, I think this is a horrible idea.
“Harrison Bergeron” was a fictional story that takes place in the future, where the government tries to make everyone equal. So the best ballet dancers were forced to wear weights on their arms and legs so they couldn’t dance better than anyone else. The best looking people were forced to wear masks on their faces. And the smartest people (like those who were the best at math) were forced to wear a noisemaking device inside their ears so they couldn’t concentrate on anything for more than 20 seconds at a time.
I’m sure China will do the same for their students.
God, this country is so finished.

I am 74. My school had two math classes for the eight grade.
Half the kids did not have the aptitude for the advanced class.
The basic course would be a waste of time for the other half.
How about don’t take them if you can’t do them?

George Orwell was a true visionary.
I should read 1984 and Animal Farm again. Maybe throw in Lord of the Flies (even though it was by a different author).
As I recall, Hillary Clinton sees 1984 as a cautionary tale against letting people distrust the government... and I’m sure most of the Democrat/Socialist party agrees.
The same morons who are screaming for ‘free college’ will settle for remedial math at the college level.
Pretty stupid, when you think that ‘math’ classes are being dummied-down in our public schools.
Why then can't high school sports be recruited the same way? Why not have a basketball team made up of nerds instead of Negroes? This is for the sake of equity.
Or better yet, if the Math classes become Nerds and Negroes, then out of fairness, the basketball team should also be made up of Nerds and Negroes.
To them, it’s “How To” manual..................
People are looking for a definition of “equity’. Equity is just another word for “dumbing down”.
