Here in the United States, there are many issues that people love to debate. While politics tops the list today, there are certainly other issues that could divide the country and leave people flustered and downright hostile. Up there with the best city for pizza or whether baseball should have a designated hitter rule is the issue of “what makes a good home self-defense gun?”

!2, or even a 20 gauge shotgun. And for distances inside the home, even waterfowl loads with large steel shot are good.
I’m a novice. Why is a shotgun considered the best home defense? (just asking for a friend.)
If someone doesn’t know this answer by now, they are woefully unprepared for SHTF.
Exactly. know your exit routes also. If you can only destabilize for a moment you have time to get out of your own house. A good dog has been a very useful early warning system for me in the post. One woof to wake me up and then silence as i heard glass breaking. I quickly grabbed my gun on the nightstand next to me at 3:00am. The light cover had fallen and smashed on the tile floor in the entranceway to my son’s house as I was dog sitting for a week. True story. With the gun in my hand there was ZERO fear.
What are the chances?
How about a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with door breaching ammunition?
Door breaching rounds are similar to slugs in performance out to 25 yards. They disintegrate on impact, so there is little danger of overpenetration. (As with slugs, I am assuming you are a good enough shoot to accurately identify and reliably hit your targets.).
Here’s a video on them:
Note: The specialized shotgun ammunition is not cheap and is usually sold in blister packs of 3-5 cartridges.
2 pit bulls both named Kraken...
Release the Kraken!
Follow up with a sand wedge... but not good one...
The Guns of Navarone gun aimed squarely at a giant DNC mass rally of all the Dem members of Congress and loyal leftist media and academics. Not serious. Regardless of how effective.
Phased plasma rifle with 40 watt range
357’s all also shoot 38 specials. Those move slower, but with 158 grain bullets they are quite effective and are less apt to blow a hole in an outside wall.
You could also buy a mouse gun, .380’s with special bullets are much better than they were once thought.
And remember a .22 pistol is certainly still deadly, especially the .22 magnum. Buy them with the heaviest lead, not the highest velocity.
Tank....
But what kind of city mileage does that thing get? Carbon footprint is going to matter to the new Congress. Unless they’re in the sites already....
The racking of the slide mechanism on a pump shotgun, is a terrible sobering sound.
What follows is generally really messy.
My favorite. Home defense, car defense, snake gun! Got 3
And a 410 gauge pistol. Some shoot all of the 410 shotgun ammo plus 45 long colt.
DP-12 or and a KSG.
I agree - shotguns are easy and don’trequire supreme marksmanship, and bird and buckshot is still easy to find.
If that's too many weapons (and it probably is), rank the situations by likelihood and start building your arsenal over time.
Frankly, having one weapon for all purposes is like having one tool in your toolbox.
BTW most folks forget this, but also consider your current physical fitness and start working to improve it if you think it needs improving.
Well you don’t need a gun for home defense. “Be like a Democrat and just say, get off my property, if you harm me, my attorney will sue you for everything,”
If a shotgun is good enough for Jill Biden its good enough for me.

I LIKE your “screen name”, “Madame First Lady”.
OK. Tell your friend that MOST “home invasions” & other armed crimes in the home occur AT NIGHT when it is not easy to sight a rifle or handgun. Further, a shotgun is “fully suitable” to STOP intruders (without being “too much of a good thing”) at “typical home defense distances” & is EASY to learn to use safely/properly.
(MOST all people, including people who have never even TOUCHED a firearm, will be COMPETENT with 3 or less hours of instruction with a double-barrel or pump shotgun. = FYI, my 9YO niece, who weighs 60# or so “dripping wet”, shoots a “youth model 20gauge” pump-gun quite well, though my 12-gauge ITHACA Model 37T is simply too heavy for her to use.)
Yours, ex-cadet
