The NBA took another L Friday.
Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Lakers and Heat utterly collapsed with just 4.5 million viewers. The embarrassing average is down — wait for it — 68% from last year’s Game 2, which featured a team in Canada.
How bad is the number? It’s the least-watched NBA Finals game on record. Dropping even below Game 1’s 7.41, the lowest-viewed Finals opener in history.
There is no way for the media to spin this positively. Declines of this magnitude are unheard of. Then, factor in the tank-job occurring with the league’s biggest individual and team draw in the Finals — the NBA is officially a disaster.
A ship doesn’t sink for one reason, but undoubtedly, politics sit atop the historical tank.
After nearly two decades of reinventing the NBA discussion, LeBron is now a detriment to the league’s brand.
With misleading social statements, lying about putting human rights before his brand, bowing to China, refusing to comment on the shooting of two police officers, paying for fines so felons can vote (for Joe Biden), and craving celebrity worship — LeBron now alienates more viewers than he attracts.
The NBA’s new self-inflicted identity is written in ink. Millions of turned-off Americans associate the NBA with radical politics catered to only a minimal number of sports fans.

YES. They can be related. The NBA is the biggest of the woke professional leagues. The Lakers, a normally huge draw, are getting historically low ratings. Biden appearances are small and low energy.

Theoretically the first to feel the pinch of this drastic drop in viewership should be the advertisers. But I really wonder how tightly correlated the amount of advertising is to sales, at least in the short term (a year or two), especially for the larger corporations.
For a moment I thought you said Kanji, which is Japanese written with Chinese characters. Most of the time the Japanese use two simpler scripts, called Hiragana and Katakana.
How low do the ratings have to go on an NBA or NFL event before we hear the announcement, “Due to lack of interest, the upcoming game has been canceled?”
As long as some "woke" jackasses are willing to write the checks, and the blissfully unconcerned continue to watch ANY games, the madness will continue.

It seems they are fine until the Networks decide to play the games at 1 AM, to fill the slots with other programming. When advertisers adjust the rates they have to pay (downward sharply I assume) revenue will fall sharply. I believe the players get a percentage of revenue.
Zero interest level, except in hoping LeBron loses.
How about a league with a height limit? Sprint Football would also be neat, no 300 pound linemen.
I’m pretty sure the leagues can get by with one season of bad ratings.
Two seasons of bad ratings and the advertisers are going to be demanding the leagues return to the table to renegotiate.
Three seasons and all bets are off.
Ad campaigns are a major expense for even large corporations and they have to show ROI for every ad dollar spent.
The leagues are playing with a hot and fast burning fire.
The network contracts are the difference between what LeBron makes and what LeBron is actually worth.
Without the tv revenue top stars would be lucky to make $1 million a year.
If the ratings are still down next year I expect an advertiser revolt. There have to be advertiser protections built into the contracts. I don’t see any business lawyer worth his pay not to include some.
People forget that prime time basketball is a relatively new phenomena. Basketball was dead until the Johnson/Byrd era and didn’t really break into prime time until Jordan.
Looks like the NBA will be headed back to late late night if anything.
The middle aged/older crowd is leaving sports because of the wokeness. The young people don’t watch because it doesn’t interest them....they are video game fans, they are interactive with their viewing.
Televised sports are over, dead, they just don’t know it yet.
