Yes and no. If he was *inside* his business and constrained his fire to people entering his shop or attempting to torch his shop, and had his own video evidence, possibly not as easy for the government to land on him.
On the other hand, well, he got what he voted for.
It’s not just ‘the prospect of getting shot’ - it’s also that rifles and shotguns “speak” loudly enough to start getting through mobs’ group-diminished thinking (or what passes for thinking) to get them to start dimly realizing that maybe this isn’t such a great idea. Keep in mind that mobs, and especially AntiFA *will* charge into guns, at least initially.
Also, my weapon of choice in that scenario is not an AR-15. It’s a Saiga 12 firing from drum magazines. It’s not Ma Deuce, but when the rapid 12 gauge thunder starts rolling and doesn’t seem to stop, people *listen*.
If I was serious about protecting my business during one of these things I would have to have the following:
At least one glock 17 with at least three extra magazines.
These protesters are basically just young people out having some “rowdy” fun, protected by “numbers”, with a few truly bad actors interspersed within the group. Target the bad actors coming after you and the rest will disburse out of pure cowardice and fear.
BTW, I chose that particular gun because:
1. that is the one I personally am most accurate with at the gun range.
2. I’m not worried so much about using a “man stopper” round because I think for this particular type of people (not soldiers), the number of rounds fired will be more of a deterrent.
3. It is pretty much jam proof.
Of course, I’d take a .45 too, but I’d need more magazines.

But a pipe wrench? Maybe against ONE guy. Not a mob. That will never go well for you.
The disadvantage of 3” buck is that it increases your recovery time to get your sights back on target/your barrel back down over 2.75”. In a scenario where you may need to fire as quickly as you can, controllability and rapid following shots is your priority - at least IMHO.
In such scenarios, such as guarding a glass storefront or door, a pump gun can be too slow.

Facts not in evidence. In fact, in the videos from Kenosha from the last few nights, those “young people” didn’t disperse. They fell back a little - and then they went after the guy with the rifle. Even after he shot more of them, they didn’t flee and he was forced to proceed to the police line as more of them were coming up though for the moment staying at a bit of distance.
Do *not* assume shooting just a couple of them will make the rest flee. That worked in the 60s riots, but I saw first hand how it didn’t often work in 92 and there’s video evidence that it absolutely doesn’t work in the current unrest.
His problem is he was outside his business on the sidewalk. I’m assuming the
sidewalk is gov’t property not private. Thus they had a right to be there.
And facing murder charges.
His real problem is that he is an idiot. Everything follows from that. He probably voted Dem, probably supported gun control, didn’t board up his shop to prevent glass breakage and entry, stood exposed out in the open, didn’t have a realistic expectation of the force against him... the list goes on and on.

I watched a couple of different live feeds of the protest the night before last until midnight. My main focus was to watch the individual people to notice their race, age, demeanor, etc.
That is where my comment is coming from.
And watch the video of the shooting. There were “a few bad actors”, two of which were shot. And everybody else scattered. Fear. They hadn’t signed up for that.
Funny, I haven’t seen this on big media. Weird huh?
They don’t fall back far when they scatter, and they start coming back almost immediately. Look at the other camera angles.
Especially look at the first engagement at the service station. They’re right in there after the first guy gets shot.

Look again. Those scattering don’t go far, and many of them run back in.
A shotgun would do well to take out a lot with extremely effective results.
