After battling civil unrest and looting last week, a Chicago Police lieutenant described a department stretched thin, lacking direction and fearing what could happen next.
In his almost three decades on the job, hes never seen officers stretched so thin as they were controlling crowds at protests demanding justice for George Floyd and responding to looting, vandalism and violence across the city.
Ive never experienced anything like this in my career. Theres some officers on their 10th day in a row working 12-hour days, he said before the weekend.
Chicago Police set up shop in the parking lot at Guaranteed Rate Field, where platoons would be assembled and sent to various neighborhoods.
Literally, it was Heres where youre going. It wasnt Heres your function, heres what you are supposed to do, this is what we want you to do. It was just go there and be scarecrows, the lieutenant said. Thats what they want us to do, go there and be scarecrows. Theres no direction, theres nothing. It was chaos from the very beginning.
The lieutenant said Chicago Police leadership should have acted sooner to cancel days off and put more officers on the streets.
We can Monday-morning quarterback but they should have canceled days off two days earlier. It should have started on Friday. They knew what was coming. Minneapolis, all these other places were having problems, it was definitely coming here.
The looters [were] emboldened, they are on a roll, they are getting what they want and we are unable to stop them so were letting them have it, the lieutenant said.
We [werent] really trying to catch anybody because the crowds [were] too big and we dont want our officers getting separated
and getting hurt. So, the main priority is protecting our officers.

The National Guard should have been called in to help maintain order.
Apparently Chicago’s elected officials didn’t want order.
It’s been Democrat leadership in cities across the nation that have let rioters run amok, and now they’re lining up with their hands out for federal dollars to “fix” things.
I’m sick of paying up for other people’s bad decisions.
FRANK RIZZO.
How many murders and major violent crimes per day does one city need before they prioritize their response plan?
Chicago is a sinkhole of graft and mismanagement.
???? The MAIN job is to protect the police officers?
Then why have police?
The cowardly governor sent in a token number of National Guards. Less than a thousand, far less than what was needed. Since that time all that he has done is march with BLM.
How could Chicago not be ready for unrest. They kill each other en masse weekly
Unrest. LOL. Is that what you call it?
I kind of like...a spot of unpleasantness. :)
Sorry. No sympathy. Whatsoever.
In Chicago, it is obvious from the murder rate that black lives do not matter.
Any politician that says different is a cynical liar.
Isn’t that what we pay you to do? Be prepared?
Thanks..
True... GMTA <: <: <:
Sorta like New Orleans (as a recent example) all those years of ‘levee money’ and people living high off the hog with commissioner of this and/or that while little was going to the levees, add in that EVERY year they seemed to evacuate the city-to the point where when the bigun hit nobody left because in the past the HOODS hung around and ransacked the homes of the people that paid attention to the ‘warnings’.
Somewhat like now, these Governors/Mayors not allowing baseball games or playground activities yet stand by and let people tear up their town or city in the name of ‘peaceful demonstrations’
Allowing the BIG stores open while keeping small stores closed...
(IF AND) When the SHTF, all these local despots are going to really wonder why they are being singled out...
AND, looking at the pictures of regular folks bowing and washing feet including Federal Agents & Sheriffs & Police Chief & some LEO, got to figure that it ain’t agonna happen at the ballot box.
We have tried it their way, I really think it is long past time for an ANTI INCUMBENT movement, either primary the sitting member OR hold nose and vote for the opposition with TERM LIMITS being the first order of business.
We can turn over the House every two years, Senate takes a little longer but we have been ‘wandering the desert’ for a SECOND forty year segment and time for some huge changes, basically BACK to some sanity.
Isn’t that what we pay you to do? Be prepared?isn’t that what they’ve been screaming about Trump for three years and that he’s not prepared? Even though he’s only been in office for 3 years and the problems have been growing for the past 40?
Unprepared because of subhumans like mayor clubfoot and thier governor prickster
“Unprepared” ?
Seriously?
