Left-wing activists made multiple false and misleading claims on Thursday following President Donald Trumps White House Coronavirus Task Force press briefing in which the president commented on new scientific findings from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The activists falsely claimed that Trump urged Americans to inject themselves with disinfectant and told people to drink bleach.
To understand Trumps remarks, its important to first understand the full context of what was said at the press briefing.
Bill Bryan, Under Secretary for Science and Technology at DHS, said at the press briefing, Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus, both surfaces and in the air. Weve seen a similar effect with both temperature and humidity as well, where increasing the temperature and humidity or both is generally less favorable to the virus.
Bryan talked about the half-life of the coronavirus on surfaces like door handles and stainless steel surfaces, saying that when they inject UV rays into the mix along with high temperatures and increased humidity that the virus dies quickly.
The virus does not survive as well in droplets of saliva, and thats important because a lot of testing being done is not necessarily being done, number one, with the COVID-19 virus and number two, in saliva or respiratory fluids, Bryan continued. And thirdly, the virus dies the quickest in the presence of direct sunlight under these conditions.
Bryan continued by noting that DHS also tested if certain types of disinfectant could kill the coronavirus.
Weve tested bleach, weve tested isopropyl alcohol on the virus, specifically in saliva or in respiratory fluids, and I can tell you that bleach will kill the virus in five minutes, Bryan said. Isopropyl alcohol will kill the virus in 30 seconds, and thats with no manipulation, no rubbing. Just bring it on and leaving it go. You rub it and it goes away even faster.
Bryan added, Were also looking at other disinfectants, specifically looking at the COVID-19 virus in saliva.
Immediately following these remarks, Trump said:
So, Im going to ask Bill a question that probably some of you are thinking of if youre totally into that world, which I find to be very interesting. So, supposing when we hit the body with a tremendous, whether its ultraviolet or just very powerful light, and I think you said that hasnt been checked, but youre going to test it. And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said youre going to test that too. Sounds interesting. And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so itd be interesting to check that, so that youre going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me. So, well see, but the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute. Thats pretty powerful.
A few moments later, ABC News reporter Jon Karl asked Bryan, The president mentioned the idea of a cleaner, bleach and isopropyl alcohol emerging. Theres no scenario where that could be injected into a person, is there?
No, Im here to talk about the finds that we had in the study, Bryan responded. We dont do that within that lab at our labs.
Trump then clarified his remarks: It wouldnt be through injections, youre talking about almost a cleaning and sterilization of an area. Maybe it works, maybe it doesnt work, but it certainly has a big affect if its on a stationary object.
Trump later raised the possibility of whether UV rays could kill the coronavirus if it was on a persons skin, in particular if it were on their hands.
If theyre outside, right, and their hands are exposed to the sun, will that kill it as though it were a piece of metal or something else? Trump asked.
I dont want to say it will at the same rate because its a non-porous surface, but what we do know is that we looked at the worst case scenario and the virus lives longer on non-porous surfaces, Bryan responded. So porous surfaces, it doesnt live quite as long, so in theory what you said is correct.
Left-wing activist Chris D. Jackson wrote that Trump had urged Americans to inject themselves with disinfectant.
Jake Maccoby, a former speech writer for the Obama Justice Department, wrote on Twitter that Trump had told people to drink bleach.
Others have repeated the false claims.
The President says something fairly simple.
The Press is too stupid to understand, and tells everyone that the President is stupid.
Some percentage of the population walks around thinking “I can’t believe that idiot is president”.
I agree with the President... all vile, lying POS liberal scum should inject themselves with disinfectant AND drink a pint of bleach to protect themselves from the mean virus.
Would someone please tell the lying progressives that drinking bleach works actually much better than hydroxychloroquine, and they should try it!
Haha I just posted this on a soccer mom site where this lady said that trumpians drink bleach
all vile, lying POS liberal scum
A bit verbose but effective!
Could be one of my in-laws.
Trump did not say that.
Some dishonest, ignorant journalist thought that up and put those words in his mouth.
People on Face Book are having a field day with this!
The Press understood fully well. They just chose to parse Trump’s words into something that fits their agenda and hatred of him.
Is there video of what Trump said?
As I recall, the Nazis sometimes used to inject prisoners with carbolic acid.
It was the top headline in the morning rag I sometimes read online (only because its free).
of course we are dealing with D’s. remember the idiot D donor who imbibed some gardening product with chloroquine in it or some such. so we have to remember there is that part of the population — ahem.
Last night I was minding my own business and Donald Trump himself called me on my cell phone!
He told me to drink more Ovaltine.
Obviously comprehension is not taught any more in college. Those cretins can only hear what they want things to mean.
No ..IT WAS A TRAP! Trump should have said..ARE YOU STUPID WHAT PART OF USING IT TO CLEAN SURFACES DONT YOU UNDERSTAND?!!! Ugh! Please someone get us out of our misery with this bastard mediaVOMITS!!! Please!!
Ive noticed that Reckett Bensingers U.S. headquarters is in NY, and Im wondering if NY has hoarded the nations supply of Lysol since Lysol cannot be had anymore, and because you have this insane pronouncement coming from the brand... that nobody in neighboring states can find... that people are finding substitutes for among other brands that DONT leave us high and dry in a crisis.
This brand will be losing market share if they are not careful.
The press isn’t stupid in this case. They are waiting to pounce on anything that can be misinterpreted into something they can use to make Trumps sound stupid — in other words to manufacture fake news. So they are actually being clever but in a demented way to serve their demented ideology which rejects reality most of the time.
Trump is baiting them, he is the master troll, the press never learns.. So flu vaccines can be loaded with anti microbial chemicals like neomycin... the only difference between an antibiotic and a disinfectant both are anti microbial, agents but the antibiotic is deemed safe to ingest by other people than Trump. So is it going to come out that not all our vaccines are not the same but have been tainted for years harmful agents? I think so, Trump will have a field day lampooning the press who have been demanding a vaccine as the ransom to go back to work, yet they knowingly look the other way about the possibility disinfectants being injected in people through bad vaccines. How can the press never question any consumer product to be free of any harmful agents let alone one that would be demanded everyone ingest while telling us trump is an idiot and dangerous role model?
