I just discovered "The Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson and it's a darn good song.

Posted on 01/25/2020 2:59:22 PM PST by SamAdams76

I think I played this song at least 10 times today.

I discovered this because I am building a playlist of songs that were popular a half century ago. I intend to carry this through for the rest of my life. The playlist is called "50 Years".

I was born in 1962 so I only started remembering music around the year 1970 but back then, it was Partridge Family, Archies, that type of stuff, because I was only 7 years old, you know.

But this song by King Crimson is EPIC. Turns out that the late Greg Lake did vocals. It's a 10+ minute masterpiece. Said to be the first real "prog-rock" album.

Here it is in all it's glory

Anyhow, it's great to discover music a half century after it came out. The album art is ugly but I'll post a lion down below, which is pretty cool.

What Hendrix was really really good at was fills. Little triad and melody improves almost in the background. Mostly unnoticed. The manic stuff is what everyone heard and was very inconsistent. When it worked it was great but when it didn’t he needed someone in studio to say Jimi knock it off that was crap.

You are right but Squire passed. A terrific Bass player and Yes without Anderson is preposterous.

Uh oh. You’ve found prog. Soon you’ll be complaining that 14 minute guitar solos lacked room for the player to breath and express himself. It’s a great place. And there’s still great Prog going on now. Look up Steve Wilson. Also great King Crimson (Crimso for short) going on. The current lineup with 3 drummers is freaking amazing.

I’ll never forget listening to Jonathan Schwartz one night making a big deal about introducing a new band with a new kind of music.. “For the first time on our station.. The RAMONES! MAKE ‘EM or BREAK ‘EM!” After he played the song he said “BREAK ‘EM”!! Wow, was he wrong. At the time I agreed!

That one hit me as hard, as Peart hit Rush fans.

Hawkwind... only concert I have ever fallen asleep at. I gave them a second chance and it happened again!

I just liked "Silver Machine" with Lemmy.

I can't fathom that he is still able to do that. He's in really good shape for his age. 8>)

If I stand on one leg I would probably lose balance and topple over. 8>)

“King Crimson is an acquired taste.”

When something hurts my ears I have no desire to acquire a taste for it.

I have a huge collection too and put it on random play when I am on the computer. It has taken years to acquire and organize my music library. Most of songs are from mainstream artists.

I like threads like this because I am made aware of artists and songs I never heard of. If I like it I will put it on a list of songs to download from Freegal (https://www.freegalmusic.com/home) if it is available. These songs are free and legal. This is primarily where I get my music now.

There should be more threads like this. Discussing politics gets to be too much at times.

You might get a Partridge Family track squeezed between George Thorogood and Emmylou Harris!

I've found some of the really jarring juxtapositions will sometimes freak guests out, especially, when I have some modern metal followed by Anonymous 4.

I do keep the classical stuff separate as well as my Christmas music (over 4,000 Christmas tracks alone!)

I don't separate the classical, but definitely the Christmas music. It's actually in a separate directory tree, to keep it segregated. Starting in December, I allow some of it to mix in. There is still some random Christmas music scattered around my main directory tree, and it comes up occasionally. I generally just skip it, unless it's something like the Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas album, as stuff like 'Linus and Lucy' isn't really Christmassy.

Thanks for the link.

I agree with you. IMO, Wetton’s vocals on “Starless” were spectacular. As you stated, his vocals helped make the song even darker than it already was.
