I just discovered "The Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson and it's a darn good song.

Posted on 01/25/2020 2:59:22 PM PST by SamAdams76

I think I played this song at least 10 times today.

I discovered this because I am building a playlist of songs that were popular a half century ago. I intend to carry this through for the rest of my life. The playlist is called "50 Years".

I was born in 1962 so I only started remembering music around the year 1970 but back then, it was Partridge Family, Archies, that type of stuff, because I was only 7 years old, you know.

But this song by King Crimson is EPIC. Turns out that the late Greg Lake did vocals. It's a 10+ minute masterpiece. Said to be the first real "prog-rock" album.

Here it is in all it's glory

Anyhow, it's great to discover music a half century after it came out. The album art is ugly but I'll post a lion down below, which is pretty cool.

1969, the year I got my first car, put an FM stereo radio converter into my 8-track player and discovered KSHE 95, Real Rock Radio.

John Barleycorn is Dead.

Casey Jones you better watch your speed.

Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes.

That sounds like the Yes “Cruise to the Edge”.

Problem those bands are basically “Tribute Bands” with just one or two original members. Yes isn’t Yes without Anderson and Squire.

Hey! 1962! Me too, but I only admit that anonymoysly :)

Isn’t it great to find new tunes? I found one today - Phil Collins Big Band playing Pick Up the Pieces for 25 minutes.

I’ve been a Rush fan for a few decades so naturally I know King Crimson and other prog rockers. KC really started that genre off. Definitely not “easy listening” :)
But better than some of Genesis’ early attempts.

I’m glad Lake went on to ELP - my 2nd or 3rd fave after Rush :)

And fwiw, I think we were born at the best possible moment of the musical universe. We had front row to the best. And there is SO MUCH good stuff we’re still mining the mother lode!

May we all continue to find gems :)

Cheers!

“One must always include this song in a playlist: Jethro Tull - Aqualung”

A short story...

A friend is a highly acclaimed mastering engineer based in LA. I’ve provide high-end amps I imported/distributed for him to use in his mastering and he graciously included my website in the album credits.

One album he remastered was “Aqualung” but the real original studio master could not be located so the project was put on hold.

After 3-4 months, Steve got a call in the middle of the night from Ian Anderson who said (in his English accent):

“Well, I found the master tapes - they were in my garage all this time”.

So the tapes were expressed to Steve and, amazingly, were in good shape....except for a short portion 90 seconds into of “Aqualung” where the tape began stretching. Steve’s only option was to splice a small section from a backup copy and...the best version of Aqualung was remastered.

Did you include any Dave Clark 5 or Wilson Pickett in your list?

I was never had their albums myself, but my music-mate across the street had their album: Getting This.

Listened to that one a lot!

King Crimson is definitely on my playlist. A few others I chose at random just off the top of my head.

In A Gadda Da Vida

Post Toastee

Stranglehold

Locomotive Breath

This one is from a gentleman that didn't get a lot of play in the US but helped launch the careers of many well known rock artists.

I liked Deep Purple best when Tommy Bolin was their guitar man.

I’ve been doing the same thing. Born in ‘52, I grew up in a house with lots of music, from the 40’s and up. So I’ve been finding “the soundtrack of ,
My life” and really enjoying it.
Audio quality is all over the map, though.

True, true. Fortunately, there is a small venue near me, Count Basie Theater. They have had so many great old bands or remaining members of great bands at least. Over the past 8 yrs I've been extremely lucky to have seen Ian Anderson, Jeff Beck, Cream, Traffic, Boston, Foreigner, Weird Al, Buddy Guy, J. Geils Band, Mark Knoffler, Moody Blues and the Beach Boys to name a few. 😁

Roy Buchanan was another Great guitarist who couldn’t sing. Loved his version of ‘Hey Joe’.

Saw James Taylor on December 6th, 1970.

Moody Blues concert was December 10th, but I didn’t want to spend the $7.00.

A landmark album altogether. Saw them live this Sept at Radio City - an absolutely amazing band - fripp at 70+ still the most frightening guitarist on the planet. 3 drummer front line. Monsterous.

Jethro Tull was my 2nd concert ever. Filmore East 1970.. I think Wishbone Ash was the opening band. My big brother and his girlfriend took me and my friends. What an experience!
