While we do need to reinstate some type of hospital system to HELP the mentally ill, rather than leaving them to disintegrate on the streets and endanger the general public, we must be very, very careful.
The prospect of involuntary & even extrajudicial hospitalization of people deemed a danger to themselves & others raises a troubling & more fundamental question: who gets to define who is “insane”?
