The end of 2019 brings some grim news for Hollywood bean counters.
The years box office tally came in roughly 4 percent lower than 2018. Thats the sharpest decline in 5 years, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
With Dec. 31 fast approaching, industry leader Comscore projected Sunday that box office revenue in North America will hit $11.45 billion for the full year, a decline of 3.6 percent from 2018s record bounty of $11.88 billion.
Will 2020 offer a Hollywood-style comeback? We wont know for another 12 months, but the early signs are ominous.
Consider 2019 featured not one but two films capping epic franchises. Avengers: Endgame certainly delivered on its promise, both creatively and commercially. The film, tying up loose ends from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), became the highest grossing movie of all time.

For me it really is. I did see the latest star wars in 3d this week because it was something for my grandson and me to do. I also saw Avatar in 3D Imax and I got a free pass to see a movie in a theater back in 1999. But that’s about it.
And with modern 4k TV’s, and my ability to just wait until a flick is available on Blue Ray to rent (or free on Amazon Prime or Netflix) going to the theater to watch a movie really is “sooooooo 20th century”.
Same here.
Anyone with a basic knowledge of the Internet can download all of the movies they want for free, usually before they are available to the general public. I can only remember downloading 3 movies in 2019, Avengers Endgame, Joker and Yesterday. Dozens were available but they weren’t worth the bandwidth, even for free.
Now that might work. Smile...
“Movies” based on comic books.
Their flakey target audience would have nothing to do with the decline...../s
Hollywood needs to do a “New Three Sttoegs” with an all female cast.
Wasn’t there a post the past couple of days about Netflix making “Thunberg-The Movie”?
Hollywood's real problem is twofold. One, their content stinks - and that is probably being too kind. With very few exceptions they simply are not creating anything I really want to watch.
I refuse to go see "woke" BS. If your movie or project has a liberal/socialist/globalist/homosexual theme being shoved into my face, I'm not going to pay my hard earned money to support your ideas and ideals. Not going to happen. Oh, and if you cast actors and actresses who have made a point of running their mouths off on the same, I'm not going to support them either. (I'm looking at you De Niro, you POS) But that goes for any celebs who think their position gives them a right to speak out as authorities on topics they are obviously breathtakingly ignorant on.
Aside from woke BS, Hollywood has a problem with finding, or maybe recognizing good new material. We don't want or need another remake. If you think you can do better than the original you probably cannot. With very few exceptions remakes are never as satisfying as the originals.
Hollywood's other fundamental problem is what to do with that content - assuming they start generating content people want to see. Movie theaters can be a good experience, or a bad experience. Increasingly people are turning to online streaming services - good news, right? People are more likely to pull up something at home and watch a few minutes or an hour or two than they are to make a trip into town to watch something on someone else's schedule. However, streaming services are starting to fracture. A quick search shows over 200 various streaming services are now available. The problem here is, exclusive agreements between streaming services and content producers. No-one is going to sign up for even the top dozen streaming services. I'd guess most consumers might sign up for one, two, maybe three services. So if Hollywood produces something, but it only gets streamed on one service their potential audience and revenues go down.
Other than teens on a date with no home of their own, who wants to go to a movie theater?
We probably spent the least of any years on movies. They are simply Millennial Movies: Introspection of little accomplishment. “And now I go to fight the big battle, talking to myself”.
Superhero movies are going to crash and crash big soon
Two things
1) Thanos was such a bad-ass villain after him everything is going to be second tier.
2) Hollywood is out of ideas. Superhero movies are doing good because they are telling stories from the 1970’s - 1990’s that couldn’t be put on the big screen back then. Now that they have gone through the big epic stories of the past, there’s not much left for the future.
I liked “Breakthrough,” a true story, except they changed the doctor from white to black. Also liked “Peanut Butter Falcon.” My mom liked both too.
There is one other movie out worth seeing, Togo.
It’s the story of the dog sled team that saved Nome Alaska by delivering serum for the Diphtheria outbreak that was occurring.
Probably the best movie I’ve seen in years. 99.9% SJW free (No Black Transvestite Lesbian dog mushers).
5 out of 5 stars
Midway was excellent!
My wife and I watched Togo last night on Disney Plus. Very well made. Good movie.
Last time I went to a theater I was exposed to the sight of two ‘men’ kissing deeply on the big screen....during the previews! All done with Hollywood.
Guess what? There were no gay characters, no agenda shoved in our faces. Sure, the pilot's character was made female, probably as an excuse for a little more depth of interplay between her and the budding meteorologist. It was fun because it was unpretentious - it is a movie that knows it is just entertainment, not social commentary.
I’ll check it out.
It’s playing now over at Emagine.
When most of your unoriginal sh*t is a remake of a remake that was a remake of a remake, yeah, sh*t not going to end well for ya...../s
If Hollywood wants to make lots of money then I suggest making remakes of successful films with social justice warriors plots inserted and actors who hate the audience.
Oh wait... been done. Maybe make entertaining films without all of the above.
