My crazy cousin texted me today, she is the same one who criticized police officers and Republicans during Thanksgiving. She texted me today, saying that police are not trustworthy with minorities and women. She is upset because her brother wants to be a police officer. What would you tell her if you were related to her?

Why complicate life and tell her anything? She's the one upset that her brother wants be a policeman, not you.

She sounds like a toxic relationship. I did so much better in life, had much less angst, when I learned not everyone can be “fixed” and that it wasn’t my responsibility to train anyone to be an “adult” when they already were one. All we can do is encourage or discourage behavior.

With distance between you both, tell her there are bad and good people in all occupations. Additionally, tell her she is stereotyping a whole class of people, so she is smearing honorable people just like she believes police smear minorities. She is a bigot—tell her that.
