Yesterday I decided to let Microsoft update my version of Windows 10. Big mistake. I had three games I really liked that I think originally came with Windows XP. I liked them well enough to move them from my old machines to my new one each time I upgraded my computer.
After the update, I went to play a game of FreeCell, but it was gone from the desktop, as were Mahjong and Hearts. I looked in the directory where I installed then and they were gone. I started checking online and found that Microsoft removes any of its "free apps" it finds that were ported to the current OS from earlier Windows releases.
I think this is absolutely wrong. I paid for those apps when I bought XP...they are part of the original installation of that OS and they have no right to remove what I paid for. I am beyond being PO'ed.
will videos play at different websites?
Thanks to ShadowAce for the ping!
I’m trying to get stuff OFF my computer. I’m not taking their updates.
Gary Kildall
Nope...Kildall was CPM, not DOS.
In that case I don’t remember either
May I suggest you install a virtual machine and load whatever OS you need to run your favorite software. While most of you may not have your old XP or Win 7 install disks still laying around there are several former versions of Windows on various archive sites, as well as CP/M, OS2 and other fossils from the dinosaur age.
"Brave" is supposed to also be designed for Linux but I had problems with it, they have some fixing to do before it will run correctly on Linux. And everything else in Linux pretty much functions, and will do, what win 7 will do. The particular version I am using is all laid out the same as Win 7 so it was already familiar as soon as I started using it. All the mouse functions, Right click menu, drag and drop, toolbars, icons, menus, Etc. are almost the exact same and they control the same things as Win 7.
It really is not a big jump and complicated change like it used to be. And here is the cool thing, like Gato mentioned you can make a CD or thumbdrive and run it from one of those to try it out before actually installing it. And if you like, it can be installed "dualboot" on top of Windows so that you can boot up and use either if you like. This is what I did, but I am now to the point of just dumping windows altogether, I have been able to do anything I want in Linux and don't need OR WANT windows anymore. :)
Mail me for all the info if you like, I have helped several here make the change over step by step. It would be my privilege, I now love to take customers away from MS! It's not at all as hard as it sounds with these newer versions. :)
Oracle Virtual Box. It’s free. Just don’t upgrade it after installing guest OSs. The upgrade may ‘lose’ them.

Unfortunately, this short blurb doesn’t give the developer of QDOS.

Here’s a better reference.
And the rumor and myth has been dispelled! It was Tim Paterson. That one has been going around for years and years. In “history”...

THANKS I WILL.
“MS is a vile company. ... It started by taking advantage of and destroying developers and companies that could not deal with its low and nasty tactics,”
I’m still pissed that they bulldozed over much superior apps (WordPerfect, Lotus, etc.) with their bundling of their apps on all new PCs decades ago. By the time MS was forced to stop their bundling scheme, the world had become entrenched in the sewer if MS Office.
Go to the App Store and download the new versions of them, they actually play much better and support touch screen as well. At least Mahjong and the Solitaire suites. I havent looked for Hearts so Im not sure about that one. The ones you were using go back to Windows 95 IIRC.
The XP version of Recorder was the best. I found it on an old XP laptop we have and copied it in to my Windows 7. It doesn’t really work. Versions after XP have had Recorder but they’re not as good.
MS is really good at making things worse as they issue upgrades.
Looking forward to it!
Thank you
Thank you! Cool! I obviously didn’t know that existed.
