A Red Flag Law Won’t Prevent Another Massacre
American Greatness ^ | 8/9/2019 | Sebastian Gorka

Yes, America has a problem.

And no, red flag laws will not stop the next mass shooting.

Nor is “mental health” the heart of the matter.

I am an American by choice. My pride in being an American today is a function in part of choosing to be a citizen of the freest and greatest nation the world has ever seen, and although I may not have been born or raised in America, I am familiar with our history and our cultural heritage.

As a result I know that not too long ago, in living memory, gun culture so universally permeated American society that it would be totally normal for young boys to bring their .22-caliber rifles or single-barreled shotguns to school with them, keep them in their lockers, and use them on the way home to bag small game—even in California, one of the most anti-Second Amendment states in the nation today.

Yet children didn’t open fire upon one another in the corridors during recess or compile “murder lists” with the names of classmates they wished to kill. So the presence of guns per se is a red herring and tells us nothing. Not to mention the fact that you can kill far more people than either the Dayton or the El Paso murderers combined simply by stealing a truck—in one case, more than 80 innocent people in less than two minutes—without one large-capacity magazine.

Well there’s over a half a dozen States that have them already, including some that allow family members to petition a judge to remove another family members guns. You’re welcome to move to one of those States. That’s the beauty of our system isn’t it?

But we don’t need fedgov to be involved, else someone like a lower level Lois Lerner might be involved in taking guns

Not everyone.

But I’ll bet some do, or they tell someone they know that urges them.

a red flag law will make all these people think twice about saying something.

They will skip to shooting up the mall.

“They will do nothing to stop shootings like the last three because its highly unlikely they were organic in nature.”

Are you implying facts not in evidence?

And, are you saying these shooters were not bat shit crazy, and that everyone around them knew that?

OF COURSE such laws could stop these last 3.

I’m sorry you had to experience that in your family. My family also has a history of mental illness including attempted and actual suicide by close family members.

That said, such anecdotal evidence should not be enough to circumvent the constitution of the United States. What you are calling for in support of Red Flag Laws is a government who can take away personal property and self-protection for a perceived threat. You do understand that if someone gets in power that says being a Conservative or a Christian or a McDonald’s worker or whatever is a mental illness that they will use such laws to strip law-abiding citizens of their self-protection against such tyranny.

You posted to Free Republic. I am certain there are those on the left that believe that this act constitutes evidence of mental illness.

That’s the danger.

If the libs had their way, all guns would be illegal or you’d have to have a yearly psych exam in order to leagally own a firearm, which, of course would need to be locked up and not available for self defense. This is where NZ is heading now, along with semi-auto bans.

I wonder what criteria they might use to decide that you are not mentally stable enough to own a gun? The very fact that you would want one means you’re nuts!!

it actually makes it more likely.
who will go in for mental health care knowing they will nab their guns?

*************

Exactly right.

Bat shit crazy and on psychotropic drugs and pointed in the right direction. The Dems are screaming for gun control and just like that three mass shootings in less than 2 weeks. Its like a miracle.

The thing about red flag laws is that if a person is so mentally unstable their firearms must be seized, then they ought to be in a mental hospital.

I am in one of those states, so I don’t need to move. I was just explaining my perspective. It doesn’t need to be a federal law.

I think I understand your concerns and share them. Personal freedom is something that is also being taken away by involuntary confinement.

I am old enough to remember when involuntary mental health confinement was easier to arrange. I know there were abuses, but I think that the laws have gone too far the other way in that area. As to taking away constitutional rights, I am very concerned over that, but most rights are already being run roughshod over.

Search and seizure, taking without compensation, right to not incriminate oneself, right to see those that accuse you, “free speech,” etc.

I only support red flag laws that have checks and balances so that the politically corrupt can not use the law as a method of punishment or of intimidation.

The ONLY consequence of “Red Flag” laws will be that a lot of innocent people will have their guns and ammo stolen FRom them! By their local judges and their “Protect and Serve” PD!

Mass murderers are gonna mass murder, and there is nothing a “Red Flag” law can do to stop them.

Evil is evil, Mariner, and evil people will do evil things!

By Any Means Necessary!

The solution to this problem is Constitutional Carry! If these lunatics KNOW that a given percentage of citizens are out and about carrying their favorite hand gun, they will fer damn shure think twice about committing their evil deed.

Why is it, do you suppose, that ALL of these mass murderers chose GUN FREE ZONES to commit their heinous act?

Good guys ‘n gals with guns CAN STOP BAD GUYS!

Several of the shooters recently expressed support for gun control.

If any is passed it will reward them and encourage MORE shootings to get MORE gun control.

Trump opened Pandora’s box with the bumpstock ban, it let the left know that shootings would work to get gun control.

Yes, her report was weak, and probably did not want to institutionalize her son. This is the problem with family and therapists reporting. But this should not stop school authorities, as a former teacher, I would have to report suspect behavior, (already true if you suspect child abuse) but should be extended to things like posting a rape list. Where are the teachers and administrators? Immaturity may be a case in point but to my thinking one does not grow out of really dangerous behavior.

Sorry his mom was not able to close the deal.
