I am pleased to announce that highly respected Congressman John Ratcliffe of Texas will be nominated by me to be the Director of National Intelligence. A former U.S. Attorney, John will lead and inspire greatness for the Country he loves. Dan Coats, the current Director, will be leaving office on August 15th. I would like to thank Dan for his great service to our Country. The Acting Director will be named shortly.

“Pence helped Trump fill key appointments with those he was close to, including Dan Coats”
Pence and Coats were at the top of Indiana Republican politics together - Governor and Senator. Indiana Party politics may have had a role, perhaps just long acquaintance, or possibly Pence owed Coats some favors.
“The Governor of their State can appoint a temporary replacement”
“That’s for Senators. The only way to sit in the House is to be elected.”
SMGFan and jjotto already straightened me out on that. Lazy writing on my part, to not verify first.
The Gov. cannot appoint a Congressman, it needs a special election.
If the position has been created or there has been a pay increase for the position during the immediate term.
Sometimes this has been ignored; other times special legislation has been passed to reduce the pay.
From Article I, Section 6:
No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States, which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been encreased during such time
I think he’s been on the radar screen for some time. His performance last week was just the latest reason why, illustrating that the man has his fundamental principles down pat. Important for intelligence work, which is inherently creepy and tempting. Brennan came into it a corrupt creep and got worse. Ratcliffe might just be the very one to withstand the temptations and stay within the law.
IIRC, Coats publicly criticised several positions taken by PDJT. I agree that he is most likely deep state.
No, Coats wasn’t! That is part of why Trump took the unusual step of giving Barr greater declassification powers.
Now, Barr himself is a long-time Swamp Critter, of course, back to the Bushes and all. But still he seems to be on a mission to sacrifice at least a couple of lambs from the flock. Ratcliffe isn’t some sort of anti-Establishment radical himself, having been, for example, partners with Ashcroft. But he is a rock-ribbed conservative and so more credible as a legitimate supporter of Trump and MAGA.
Will Ratcliffe be able to manage the IC as a relative outsider? Certainly no insiders in that position have done anything for the American people on that front, so it is not as if the alternative approach would have been better. It was a tiny little town that he had been mayor of, but even that gave him good buck-stops-here managerial experience on the plus side. Plus, as a veteran of the DoJ he’s no doubt seen and maneuvered a fair bit. And of course there is the work he has done on oversight of the IC in Congress.
At least a more promising nomination by a fair bit than Trump might have made (such as his original Coats clunker).
That’s what I thought. I remember there being some stuff thrown around when she accepted the SecState job, but of course, it was during the last admin and they got away with whatever they wanted.
True, but she and Soetero upended the law and now it’s ignored. I threw the question out there just to see what folks thought of it. Not really a big deal, IMHO, as long as the person does their job. Wherever they represent is going to be decided by that state’s voters, their problem not mine.
No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States, which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been increased during such time; and no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office.
I knew it would happen as soon as Coats spoke against Trump policy a few months ago on Korea and before that on Russia.
I didn’t consider his data reliable since he appeared to be aiding the establishment.
That was helpful, abb. Thanks!
Sitting congressmen have resigned to take presidential administration jobs since the days of John Adams. Ive never heard of a law or rule against it.

If I read it right, they have to resign when they’re appointed, not when confirmed.
Clinton’s nomination popular, but is it constitutional? http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/04/clinton.eligible/index.html
I remember there being lots of folks throwing the yellow flag when this went down.
Sen Samuel Dexter did not resign until confirmed by the Senate as War Secretary. That was the year 1800. I believe the authors of the Constitution understood it better than todays speculators. Case closed.
Id rather see a complete dismantling of that worthless den of vipers, but...
...baby steps I suppose.
Yup. Thats what I thought
