I am pleased to announce that highly respected Congressman John Ratcliffe of Texas will be nominated by me to be the Director of National Intelligence. A former U.S. Attorney, John will lead and inspire greatness for the Country he loves. Dan Coats, the current Director, will be leaving office on August 15th. I would like to thank Dan for his great service to our Country. The Acting Director will be named shortly.

“Kind of surprised he lasted this long”

Maybe there is some professional courtesy for members of the Senate club, to keep future nominees from bearing any retaliation.

Very embarrassing to be caught flat-footed when you're the "Intel Chief." The proper response would be; "Sorry, I have no comment" instead of "that is going to be special."

What kind of idiot would do this? Apparently a Mr. Dan Coats... the soon to be unemployed Director of National Intelligence.

Coats’ job as DNI was to not be Clapper & give assurance to the “Old Boys” in the Senate with a familiar face. He had been on the Senate Select Committee for Intelligence, his only qualification. He basically was a placeholder. Time to go, he sat in the chair long enough.

Mike Pence talked Dan Coats out of quitting the Trump administration
Whenever Trump is souring on Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, whom he calls “Mister Rogers,” Pence encourages him to stick with Coats.

Pence helped Trump fill key appointments with those he was close to, including Dan Coats, nominated to be director of national intelligence

Why remove someone who is good from Congress?
*********************************************
Because Ratcliffe is as tough as nails and will be neither intimidated nor “snowed” by the Deeper Staters in the Intelligence bureaucracies. This will be in sharp contrast to the “compliant-to-the-bureaucracy” and Sessions-like Coats. It’s a great move by President Trump and perfectly timed, IMHO.

But can he de-douche-ify Christopher Wray?

The Governor of their State can appoint a temporary replacement

That's for Senators.

The only way to sit in the House is to be elected.

It is my longstanding view that Mr. Pence has not been as helpful to the President in forming a government or establishing a working relationship with the Congress as he might have been.

Thanks for your comments. Sounds good, although I'll miss John Ratcliffe in Congress. Is he in a safe, reliable conservative district?

I think since Greg Abbot is governor of Texas and knows the value of every republican in the House, he will arrange to have the spot filled by Special Election in quick order.

Greg is Great.

I have a fantasy that Coats found out about when he was leaving his post when President Trump announced that Ratcliffe would be the NEW DNI on August 15th.

When I think of that, I get a beg smile on my face.
Coats was a jerk.

Ratcliffe seems very sharp. He is a former Federal Prosecutor himself, and did an excellent job on Mueller (starts around 27 seconds in):
