There’s no denying the South has some of the best fried chicken in the country. But the secret's out and all around the country chefs are frying up some great fried chicken. Here are our picks for the 13 best.

If you find yourself craving fried chicken in upstate New York, Portland, Oregon or California, we’ve got you covered. Some of these restaurants are serving up classic Southern fried chicken or putting their own twist on our fried favorite. Either way, all of these restaurants will satisfy your fried chicken

The Crack Shack San Diego Founders Michael Rosen and Atlanta transplant Richard Blais had a bold, but simple vision when they created The Crack Shack: Southern California fried chicken and eggs. And with their “crack spice” and locally raised free-living chickens, the menu at The Crack Shack reimagines these classic dishes. While the menu varies at each location, the delicious fried chicken stays the same.

You may be right most of the time, but not ALL.of the time. There’s a gem of a restaurant here in my little Midwest town that serves Aunt Bee’s Fried Chicken. You can get it bone in or boneless. I’ve tried it both ways, and both are worth the trip. I’m a native Floridian, the northern part of Florida which is very Southern. I’ve hailed this as the best fried chicken ANYWHERE, and it tastes just like my Mama used to make it. I’ve had MANY people tell me it can’t be that good...until they try it, and then admit I was right.

While Publix does a nice job when I visit my old state, it’s nothing compared to what I can get just down the street from my house. It’s the greatest little family restaurant. I would tell you the name, but I don’t want it to get more crowded than it already is.

Love strouds.

Best compliment my wife ever gave was about my fried chicken (deep fried in a fish cooker dedicated to chicken), “better than strouds”.

Yep!

BABE'S, for example, started in Roanoake, TX. and has since fanned out, packed and successful everywhere. I bet Babe's would work anywhere in the US.

They get the chicken crust right and the sides right (meaning they have that traditional, somewhat underwhelming country cafe taste instead of gourmet perversions that don't taste "right"). Biscuits are served with butter and honey and molasses! All family style.

Next door to Babe's in Roanoke is Oak Street Pie Co. Worth popping in to.

One of my favorite chicken shacks in Los Angeles is Jim Dandy Fried Chicken at Vermont and Imperial, near the 105 freeway. This is in the Harbor Gateway neighborhood, just west of Watts. Due to the area's high crime rate, you stand in front of a bulletproof window to place your order, then pay through a metal slot, through which you also receive your meal--the same way you do transactions at some banks. However, the food is worth the hassle.

Louisiana Fried Chicken is also good. This is a chain of eateries, mostly in black neighborhoods, whose chicken features a thick spicy crust. I like it better than KFC or Popeye's.

That’s exactly how I do it, and additionally, I only fry it in lard.

In Los Angeles, the Won Kok in Chinatown serves excellent Chinese-style fried chicken.

Good fried chicken can also be had at the Foster Farms restaurant in Livingston, in Merced County, Calif. off the 99 freeway.

Hi.

“I would tell you the name, but I don’t want it to get more crowded than it already is.”

Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.

I miss Yogi.

>Always how my mother made it.....even down to the Crisco. Simple is better a lot of times.

Abso-freakin-lutely. Fry to a dark brown. Add a little more flour and some cream to the skillet for a gravy for mashed potatoes or white rice. I miss my Gram all these many years.

I never saw a pimiento cheese sandwich until we moved to the south. Haven’t tried one yet.

And bacon grease is the best. I keep mine in the fridge, but Mom always had hers in a jar right next to the stove. We lived to tell about it. I heard it’s great on popcorn, but I haven’t tried it.

Outside of what Mom used to make back in southern Illinois (Mom was of Tennessee and Kentucky stock), I would say some of the better fried chicken I have eaten has come from some pizza joints — Capri’s in Hammond, IN, and Doreen’s in the Hegewisch neighborhood of south Chicago. Also, some of the taverns that have significant food service — and excellent Friday fish fries — also do a fine job on the yard bird. So, it’s not just the fancy places the foodies have heard of.

Oh, yes they can. zby a New York State Mile. Fried, no. Barbecued, YES! There is no better. And you can make it anyplace in the world. Call it what you want, but the batch sheet, process, and equipment followed closely cranks out the best ever. But use white pepper, and always freshly butchered Iced halves, NEVER frozen & thawed meat:

I learned how to do this back in the 1960s when our volunteer fire company made a great deal of money by contract-barbecuing chicken halves hundereds at a time, setting out feasts with roast corn, fresh salad, and maple syrup-enhanced Grandma Brown's Baked Beans

. Mmmmmmm-muh!

Oh, they’re getting chewed in the reviews though.

I want to try one of the newer “nashville” hot chicken places in L.A.
