Sources close to Chicago reporters have said the police were able to crack the case after their request for Smollett’s call log was denied by the actor. They subpoenaed the phone records instead and continued to publicly treat Smollett as a victim of a hate crime.
When he finally turned over a PDF file of his call log nearly two weeks later, investigators were able to examine which calls the actor omitted compared to their own official copy. His own tampering with the call log helped police narrow down which calls were important and who might have assisted in the hoax.
Bet he’ll claim racism if he’s charged with anything. Oh, and anti-gay stuff.

It seems I read that he walked into his building with the rope around his neck. Would he not have ripped the rope off as soon as he as able if his story was real? Wouldn’t keeping the rope around his neck be a deliberate act to focus attention on it?

I’m no lawyer, but isn’t it flat out fraud rather than conspiracy? I wish flaming race relations was a crime as well. As soon as this hoax came out, Kamala Harris immediately used it to flame race relations and I wrote to her WHEN it’s exposed as a hoax, I am going demand she issue an apology and I am, although like hell she will do it.

As of today, despite what folks are posting, the 2 Nigerians SUSPECTS were arrested for BATTERY, where Smollett is the VICTIM. Everything else, as likely and maybe even obvious as it may be, is speculation. It is possible that these charges will encourage the suspects to implicate Smollett. The CPD might even have circumstantial evidence that Smollett was conspiring with them, like phone logs before, during and after the 'assault'. But right now, none of that is known, so words like "alleged" and "according to our source" should still be used.
IMHO, media and bloggers should remain cautious to avoid libel in the unlikely event that these 2 guys actually did assault Jussie...
So far, CPD is doing some impressive work. And note that there was no leak until the suspects returned to the USA and were apprehended at O'Hare. They had everything on these guys all lined up, just waiting for them to step foot on US soil. If the suspects implicate him, then everything changes and Smollett will be in a world of trouble. Then the fun really starts.
Smollet’s peeps might also be paying the perps to cop to an assault. Time will tell.
As long as CPD don’t have evidence that Smollett was in on it, that’s definitely a possibility. Before they arrested these two guys, they had a lot more than they let on. They might have a lot more.
Curious if the names he omitted from his call logs included these two perps?
