Washington, DC, has a serious rat problem on its hands, and it has little to do with the shady goings-on at some of the highest levels of government. No, we’re talking real, honest to god rat kings who are wreaking havoc on the nation’s capital.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the DC region is facing a serious problem with Rattus Norvegicus, or the brown rat, an infestation that’s being exacerbated by both a population spike as well as mild winters. With their numbers on the rise, DC now trails New York and Los Angeles for its rat population, the Associated Press reported:

One less in my neighborhood. Last week there was a lump in the road. A feral cat played chicken with a car.

A while back wasn’t there some org like PETA or something that had this bill passed you couldn’t kill rats? You had to capture and release into the wild or something.

Also: In Ohio it’s against the law to shoot rats or mice in your own basement or was that an urban legend?

And related to what as IWontSubmit referred to above,

The “D.C. Wildlife Protection Act of 2010:

“Provider shall recommend and employ nonlethal means in preference to lethal means for the control of wildlife problems.”

A wildlife control services provider shall not use sticky or glue traps to control any wildlife. (m) a wildlife control services provider shall not use leghold and other body-gripping traps, body-crushing traps, snares, or harpoon-type traps to control any wildlife.” https://wtop.com/news/2012/01/oh-rats-whos-right-about-dcs-rodent-law/

Peter does lobby against glue traps, and D.C. forbids animal control services from using them. Meanwhile,

Maybe we could just trap the rats and send them to Guantanamo.

PETA would protest while being silent or supporting the abortion of humans.

Some years back, the People's Republic of Takoma Park ventured down this path. The city council voted to ban lethal forms of rat control and to shift to humane trapping. This was done in a rather impromptu fashion at a single city council meeting, presumably in response to agitated animal rights activists. No one bothered to ask what Takoma Park would do with the rats once they had been trapped.

Following the vote, that question inevitably surfaced. No one had thought it through, but the off-the-cuff response from the city government spokesperson was that "rats are wildlife and should be released to their natural habitat, so we thought we might take them up to Frederick County and release them in the countryside where they belong."

This met with the predictable response, and Takoma Park reconsidered before the Frederick County Militia could round up enough pickups to transport the strike force down I-270.

I didn't know DC had gone down this route, and I don't know what DC is actually doing for pest control. Perhaps the ban on lethal methods only applies to private contractors. (Wouldn't surprise me; city governments are good at blocking out competition, and a lot of facially stupid things are done with hidden motives.) I'll look into it. Perhaps DC could humanely trap the rats and take them down to the National Zoo to feed the snakes. Now THAT would be a fine suggestion for a city councilman to make the next time the subject arises.

I think the ban in DC was only for its own animal control.

And remember when the EPA stopped cities from using dry ice to kill rats in their nests?
