Shame on Trump for ordering General Motors to “put something else in”

Reuters just published this article about General Motors planning to close a plant in Ohio due to there being less demand for small cars.

Trump responded by saying:

“They better put something else in.”

It’s not the job of the President to tell private companies what products to make or how many kinds of products to make.

Shame on Trump for trying to give himself powers that are not authorized in the Constitution!

Are you kidding?
He has the right to voice his opinion, shame or deride a private company...anytime, anywhere....that IS in the constitution.....
He can’t use his government position to unfairly punish or reward those companies....
Which he didn’t.....

How Obama crushed thousands of auto dealerships

In 2009, the Auto Task Force under the US Treasury Department and its head, Steve Rattner, Obama’s Car Czar, entered into negotiations with Chrysler and GM (auto manufacturers) to “save” the auto industry. Herein, the auto task force, without inside knowledge of the industry, pressured the manufacturers to reduce the number of dealerships and fast tracked the government-managed bankruptcy to do just that. This did not allow for due process in the bankruptcy court. My personal experience on the receiving end of this injustice lines up with the overall picture as presented by Neil Barofsky, formerly the Special Inspector General overseeing TARP for the Obama administration, in his new book Bailout: How Washington Abandoned Main Street While Rescuing Wall Street. I can offer a firsthand perspective as one of many Main Streeters who got run over in the process.

GM to discontinue 6 models in 2019

In an effort to accelerate the company’s “vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions,
Zero Congestion” and save $6 billion by the end of 2020, General Motors announced
plans on Monday to discontinue the production of six passenger vehicles and shut
down five plants in 2019.

On Monday General Motors revealed plans to close five assembly and propulsion
plants across the US and Canada and completely restructure its vehicle portfolio.

A handful of slow-selling sedan models are scheduled to be discontinued next year,
allowing GM to more completely shift their focus to higher selling trucks, crossovers,
and SUVs, as well as the development of their electric portfolio as promised in
October of last year. “We believe the future is all-electric,” GM announced in 2017
while outlining their plans to introduce 20 completely electric models to the global
market by 2023.

Capitalism in action.

GM couldn't make money there, sell it to someone who can.

GM can chose to whom to sell the assets and under what terms, within market boundaries.

GM, you took the money quick enough, now dance boys.

Make the deal.

It’s not the job of the President to tell private companies what products to make or how many kinds of products to make.
But it’s OK for Obama to tell Rick Wagoner, the CEO of GM, to resign.

It was also OK for Obama to tell an entire industry (coal) to go away.

General Motors.
Not too big to fail after all.
Fail the people, that is.

I used to work for a company that made a product packaged mainly for border state customers. It was a smaller case pack that was usually one days worth of product since most users paid cash and only bought enough for that days jobs.

Among friends at the company, I referred to it as the Wetback Pack.

It seems to me that any president has every right to opine on any business decision that he wants.

Why note eliminate CAFE standards and let everybody build what people want to buy? Just a thought.

Don’t know about that. One plant is in Maryland with zero chance of going with Trump...ever

"It’s not the job of the President to tell private companies what products to make or how many kinds of products to make."

After having taken a generous bail out at the expense of the US taxpayer, GM is hardly a private company.

GM’s Overtly Political Move To Eliminate Ohio And Michigan Jobs In Order To Hurt Trump’s 2020 Chances

FTA: It’s not just that current General Motors CEO Mary Barra owes her high-paying position to former President Barack Obama, (The Obama administration had largely taken over GM with a highly-controversial taxpayer-funded multi-billion dollar bailout) or that she was on Hillary Clinton’s short list of potential 2016 Vice Presidential candidates, but that she is also largely controlled by the market influence of America’s #1 economic enemy – China. That’s right, China is likely the one behind the now-threatened closure of some of GM’s Ohio and Michigan manufacturing plants as the Establishment Media ramps up its “Blame Trump” coverage just days away from the president’s scheduled sit-down with China leader, Xi Jinping. Mary Barra appears willing to watch the destruction of American jobs in order to earn political points with her true master – China.

Why does anyone care? Companies hire and fire employees all the time. A clothing maker in my town just laid-off 200 employees. Yet other firms are hiring.

Next step - socialism. Everyone has a guaranteed job, forever.

Shame on virtue signalling keyboard warriors.

Bravo for a POTUS who actually gives a darn about where multi national corporations produce their products that Americans consume.

The White Marsh plant where they make Allison transmissions for pickups. Even though the local power structure is heavy D, it is beholden to the unions and if Trump succeeds in keeping this and other plants open that will count for something. Plus a fair number of local union workers voted for Trump, especially in the areas near the plant.

Isn't that EXACTLY what obummer did with the GM bail out? Didn't he tell them to make Volts to get the bucks?

GM is not called “Government Motors” for no reason, you know.

The fake Chevrolet Volt just was not appealing to a wide swath of the market. It was an attempt to be “politically correct” with the hybrid design, and failed rather conclusively.

Americans do not want street-legal golf carts. They want POWER, and only fossil-fueled vehicles can provide that.

Ford is concentrating on the SUVs, trucks and performance cars (Mustang in particular), and greatly de-emphasizing their sedans. They are doing tolerably well in the market.
