The White House is weighing a plan to require Central American migrants to remain in Mexico while their asylum requests are pending.
The proposed change, first reported Wednesday night in the Washington Post, would be a departure from current procedure, which allows asylum seekers to remain in the U.S. until their case is reviewed by an immigration judge.
The plan could move forward as soon as Friday, the Post reported, though a Homeland Security spokeswoman vehemently denied any such action was imminent.
DHS is not implementing such a new enforcement program at this time," DHS spokeswoman Katie Waldman said in an email. "Reporting on policies that do not exist creates uncertainty and confusion along our borders and has a negative real world impact.
We will ensure as always that any new program or policy will comply with humanitarian obligations, uphold our national security and sovereignty, and is implemented with notice to the public and well coordinated with partners," Waldman said.
Under the plan, the Post reported, Central American refugees who cannot establish credible fear of persecution in Mexico will be turned away at the border. If you are not determined to have a reasonable fear of remaining in Mexico, you will remain in Mexico, a DHS memo said, according to the Post.
Rumors of the proposed change began circulating last week, an immigration advocate told POLITICO, though an exact timeline for announcing the change remains unclear.
Its definitely something that theyre trying to move forward, said Jennifer Quigley, a strategist for Human Rights First.
DHS is still finalizing the plan, according to a former Obama Justice Department official familiar with the memos, making it unlikely that the White House will announce it this week. The official described the plan as a workaround to put pressure on Mexico.

I wish they would implement this change.
Either keep the invaders in Mexico until their hearings, or schedule the hearings last-in-first-out: cross the border today, and your hearing is today, with a requirement to pass an NSA-level polygraph before entering our country. I’ll bet the criminals would stop coming immediately with that policy. Then we could continue last-in asylum hearings and get rid of other invaders who are lying and only here for economic reasons.
It’s time to put an end to the flood of illegal invaders, and also put an end to these coached liars who get permission to enter our country but only under false pretenses.
The Mexicans in Tijuana will be sleeping in a cesspool with in a week.
All of those refugees are using the streets for their potty.
I notice that the Mexican government is putting a stop to further caravans. I think the message from Tijuana was heard load and clear.
Trump should just order the Border closed until further notice.
Pontiac, can you please expand on the news that Mexico is stopping further caravans.
Payback’s a bitch.

I want to come out with a really cool and pretentious and pompous name for a group that doesn’t really give a #### about anyone but pretends they do. :)
Maybe “Even Gang Members Matter”
Keep them in Mexico, make them legal, then as a mega-horde they will claim refugee staus at the first country they come to. America.
Oh, E. Pluribus Unum,
You said the EXACT words I was thinking about Mexico!
Mexico and it’s leaders laughed at the chaos it was causing America over the years as they financed the illegals coming into this country illegally.
Let them swim in their own juices as they in turn have to care, pay for, and put up with, illegals financed by other countries.
LOL
How about safe zones in Honduras etc.??
Just like the “Palestinians” in Gaza.
I want to thank you so much for that news.
do you know how big TJ is. 7,000 is a small parade
Does TJ routinely have 7000 homeless people suddenly take up residence in one place?
lookout post thread tell me it’s not an overgeneralization in a city of 1.5 million.,
What does that mean?
don’t remember. the point is 7000 in TJ is very small.
I get that.
My point is that an extra 7000 homeless in a few days might be noticed especially when they want to be noticed and are trying to be a pain in the A$$.
If we fold, the caravans will become HUGE and NON-STOP!
