Amazon’s missed opportunity: Failing to put part of HQ2 in a red state
The Dallas Morning News ^ | November 15, 2018 | Mitchell Schnurman, Business columnist

Amazon has been an aggressive advocate for diversity. That includes providing strong support for immigrants, minorities, the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, the military, women engineers and more.

When the company was searching for a second headquarters, it made diversity a key issue. To achieve long-term success, Amazon said last year, the winning city must have a diverse population and a community that supports it.

Does that also mean diversity in politics, geography and even home prices?

Apparently not, because Amazon chose two locales — New York City and Washington — that have a lot in common with its hometown of Seattle. All three are liberal coastal regions with sky-high apartment rents and home prices, and a strong appeal to college-educated millennials.

Call it a missed opportunity, a lost chance to plant a deeper flag in a red state where Amazon might hear some very different ideas. You don’t have to be a dreamer to believe there’s more than one way to be diverse — and to be diversified....

Thank God Amazon located where they did. We don't need their cancer infecting a red state.

I’ll point this out...they picked location that will require a higher profit margin...to cover real estate costs and housing for employees. In five years....some company can come out of nowhere...maybe attached to Wal-Mart or some Chinese effort, and undercut Amazon prices. In ten years, they will come to regret the two locations selected.

It’s all about what America can do for Amazon, not what Amazon can do for America.

Amazon like most corporations doesn’t care about politics or liberals or conservatives unless they see a way to score points cheaply against one side or the other to improve their bottom line.

I saw a blurb on Twitter indicating part of the deal Bezos got from Virginia was this: if a FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT request is filed that concerns Amazon, the corporation will have a two day grace period to “seek another remedy” before being required to comply.

Can you say UNEQUAL TREATMENT under the law and CRONYISM?!

I like the idea of concentrating liberals in a few states.

The electoral college means that they are reducing their political influence...

Amazon is a low value added service. They Design nothing. They Engineer nothing. They Manufacture nothing. They are a courier. Very effective but still a high tech bicycle courier.

Dallas is better served looking for high value added industries

Wal-Mart’s online efforts are shockingly bad, based on my recent brief search for a product there, and on Amazon. They would seem to have a LONG way to go.

Exactly. I was dreading the fact that Atlanta was one of the finalist’s. One small locale, east of Atlanta was willing to rename the place, Amazon. Interestingly, it’s a middle class, predominantly black area. All of whom would have been quickly priced out of the area due to higher property taxes, etc, that they would have had to pay, in the kickback to Bezos. Of course, Georgia would be promising all of them jobs, but there’s only so many jobs for the locals. The 6-figure ones go to all the liberal, hipster transplants that ruin everything.

You’re clearly not familiar with AWS. Selling books and widgets is far from all Amazon does.

It wasn’t to turn a profit. Headoffices do not make a company money.

It was done to try and keep in close contact with politicians to create policy that favours Amazon over its competitors.

What is AWS? Another acronym I don’t know is “SUBDUB” (? sp).

The future is throwing me aside on a string of letters and I am impaled on my ignorance/

Expect lots of wrong products delivered, late deliveries and over-billing, from the blue staters at Amazon.

Do you have their second headquarters mixed up with their warehouses?

Don’t the HQs receive the online orders and route them to the warehouses, for fulfillment?
