New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg argued with her fellow panelists on MSNBCs "Meet the Press Daily" Friday about whether President Donald Trump is the leader of the free world or an aspiring despot.
RealClearPolitics reporter Caitlin Huey-Burns was criticizing Trumps communication strategy when she called him "the leader of the free world." Goldberg interjected to say that, actually, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is the leader of the free world.
"Hes not the leader of the free world, but, sorry," Goldberg said.
"By default hes the leader of the free world," Commentary magazine editor John Podhoretz replied.
"Angela Merkel is the leader of the free world," Goldberg said, while Podhoretz laughed.
"Well, he is the most important person in the world in politics right now," Huey-Burns said, looking at Goldberg.
MSNBC's Katy Tur asked if Goldberg meant European countries dont see Trump as a leader, but Goldberg went further than that.
"Hes a sort of junior player in a bloc of authoritarian countries," she said. "Hes part of a bloc that includes [Russian President] Vladimir Putin, [Philippine President Rodrigo] Duterte."
Both leaders she referenced have faced steep criticism for violence against their own citizens, prompting Tur to push Goldberg to clarify.
"[Trump] is not rounding people up and murdering them without any due process," Tur said.
"He would certainly like to," Goldberg replied.
"I dont think you can say that definitively, Michelle," Tur said, steering the conversation to Podhoretz.
Podhoretz, a conservative critical of Trumps foreign policy, said Merkel is not the leader of the free world, but did say it is a problem if Trump weakens U.S. leadership.
"If he is not the leader of the free world, there is no leader of the free world," he said. "There is no world order without the most important richest, and most powerful country in the world trying to maintain [that]."
Goldberg defended her point by saying we now live in a world where "Saudi Arabia can intimidate Canada for sending out a tweet about its human rights record," prompting laughter from Tur and the other panelists.
Nabal. (That is the nice way to put it.)
Did obama’s drones offer due process?
What? Like Obama did, NYT?
Projecting, Michelle Goldberg. Projecting.
You mean like obama droning brown people?
“I am pretty good at killing people”
There is no other words to describe these people except being given over to a reprobate mindset.
All Trump hate all the time at the New York Times.
They just hired somebody who wants to kill whites after doing medical experiments on them.
Ahhh, Me-Shell - if you only had a brain...
Tommy Gun,,,
o h yes!
...NY Times Columnist: Trump Would Certainly Like to Murder People Without Due Process...
He must be confusing him with Hellary and Billy Jeff. What’s their total now, 125? Was Vince Foster #1? Too many to remember.
The number 1 rule of liberals is that whatever they accuse you of is precisely what they either are doing or dream of doing.
100% of the time.
Delusional nitwits at the NY Times.
I wonder if the old Pace Picante advertisement would pass muster these days?
Her frustration pleases me.
Amazing how liberals can read other people’s minds. They can always tell you what their competitors are thinking and planning to do. How long before the Bush/Cheney camps are reopened? s/
Nothing has worked so far. No matter how over the top their statements are, when they don’t work, they get even more outrageous.
What they don’t seem to understand is that two things are happening, people are growing tired of the constant outrageous claims and are moving toward the right. And second, like the little boy that cried wolf, if they ever find anything that President Trump may of done, no one will believe them.
A better course of action would have been acceptance. Accept that Trump won. Praise what he has done well and be critical of what he has failed to do. Promised to work with him (while quietly blocking his agenda).
As it is, by trying to be the “anti-Trump” they are losing the battle. There will be a tsunami in November but not the one they want and it all because of their over the top hate against President Trump and most of his supporters.
From your keyboard to God's inbox.
I think you are correct. They judge another by their own fantasy. Never any proof, just hatred for their own thoughts of what he might think. The total lack of self control reaches insanity.
With millions suddenly living without grace, I fear the time of the Gentiles is soon over. The good news, we leave soon, but I truly pity those without hope as this world is destroyed by Gods wrath.
Michelle Goldberg needs to interview Stalin and Pol Pot.
