There will be no names on the hundreds of resumés the hiring committee of a Toronto law firm sifts through this summer.
Lenczner Slaght plans to remove every name from every resumé submitted as part of the 2019 summer student hiring process, which begins next month and will see upwards of 450 candidates whittled down to fewer than 10 hires.
Its an attempt to prevent unconscious bias from seeping into hiring decisions and knocking white women and men and women of colour out of the running on the basis of non-white and non-male sounding names....

Why do we need to improve diversity? What does that even mean? Eradicate whites?
In my experience as a CAD Designer with many contract assignments or “gigs” under my belt, you best not routinely outperform any direct-hire employees if you want to make friends.
Like working too efficiently in a union factory?
99 you’re hired.
Will they also have blindfolded interviews?
If they removed all references to race and gender and only did merit based hiring, guess what the employee population would look like?
Probably. On the non-union or even “open shop” side, there is a huge emphasis on image. The more PC-sounding and looking they happen to be the more they think they’re cool with their would-be customers. HR needs to get down to the real business of doing business and making money and not be so concerned with appearances.
If the do hiring with no names, genders or photos they will hire a very qualified group of Asians and Anglos. That’s the dirty secret - a diverse workforce is often less intelligent than what they could have had.
Oooops... I bet he didn't mean to admit that.
Wow, that is .... stunning. Stunning that weighting those two items had such an effect, and stunning that they scrapped it even though it was working. I just want to bounce my head off a wall when I read that.
One of my jobs at the state unemployment office was going through company employment applications to find questions that violated labor laws, discriminated against protected classes or otherwise broke the law. We’d then notify the companies.
Unconscious bias is everywhere except the FBI. /s
It’s an interesting idea. If they run this experiment through a couple of hiring cycles, it would be interesting to see how the outcomes differ - if at all - from years in which the application-reviewers had a chance of knowing the sex and race/ethnicity of the applicants.
At the point of an interview, of course, the anonymity breaks down.
Might backfire on minorities. Id laugh if all final people were all white if all qualified.
According to the video with Antifa supporting an illegal border crossing called Roxham Road, They are doing just that. These people involved in the crossing don't look like Engineers to me.
