Why its good to carry a Pistol when Hog Hunting
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 2/16/2018 | J Hines

Feral hogs are a huge problem in the Lone Star State. So its not surprising to see YouTuber Texas bass fishing guru Justin Rackley, out doing his part to help eradicate some these pests from his home state.
On a particular night Justin is out hog hunting. He shoots one with his AR and thinks it was a clean kill shot.
But as he and the camera guy walks up to the hog, it was still alive and very angry.

As you know when you shoot one and it goes down, best to have your AR or pistol on you as you approach a wounded hog because they can still be dangerous! Good thing Justin did have his sidearm on him and shot multiple times to drop the hog completely.

What you don’t see behind the scene was that the camera guy ran leaving Justin to take care of business in the dark. Good thing it all worked out. Anyways, see the hog hunting video here.

Personally, I don't think I would set out to hunt wild pigs with anything chambered in .223 / 5.56.

I'd be inclined to use some variant of a .30 caliber rifle as my primary weapon with a back-up handgun in .45ACP, .357 magnum - or maybe even .454 Casull.

I’ve taken several with 77 grain OTM (open tip match) inside of 100 yrds with an M4orgery. Cleanly, I would add that YMMV.

Placement is key, but in general I tend to agree with your comment.

An AR is the perfect pig gun. Using 5.56 hollow point or PSP for the kill. It’s all about putting the required number of shots on the animal for the kill. When trying to eradicate a herd of 20+, you need a high capacity weapon with plenty of ammo. Stacks of loaded magazines required for killing the maximum number of these feral critters. Shooting one or two does nothing to reduce the herd.

Exactly.

A wild pig is one of the most ill-tempered creatures on earth. And they’re tough and strong - sort of like a miniature hippopotamus that doesn’t like water.

I hear what you're saying, and you probably know better than I the best way to hunt the animals.

I don't hunt wild pigs on any kind of a regular basis, but I have run across them. If I decided to take up pig hunting as a hobby or vocation I think I would consider springing for an M1 with high capacity mags, or maybe even an AR platform in .30-06. A company called Noreen either makes, or at any rate used to make, a very nice .30-06 AR for less than $2,000.

Maybe it'd be overkill, and I'd certainly spend a lot more money on ammo than those who use the standard AR, but dying at the tusks/hooves of a wounded, angrier-then-usual, wild hog is not on my bucket list.

Recently walked up on a group of 20 - 30 hogs while I was backpacking in west Tn. Five adults in the 250 - 300 lb class. The rest were less than 100 lbs. I was 20 miles from help and nobody knew exactly where I was. I dropped my ruck. Pulled my 40 cal and got real close to a good climbing tree. They passed about 20 yards away. Decided that discretion was the better part of valor. I put as much distance between us as possible. Plan on going back to the area with my 300AAC. I hear the little one are good eating.

When you do go hunting for feral hogs, make darn sure you wash your hands and don’t put anything in your mouth while handling the carcass.

I personally know one individual who picked up Brucella suis while putting a dip of tobacco in his mouth while processing a pig.

I use a Windham Weaponry AR chambered for 7.62x39. Also has an ATN Thor thermal scope.

An AR-10 in .308 might be just what the doctor ordered for you.

It’s good to carry a pistol when you’re not hunting too.

In fact, the only place it’s really not a good idea to carry a pistol is in the shower. I’m sure that Fobus makes a plastic bucket-holster for that too. Of course, where it clips is another story.

You can get .308 AR models for under $1000.

So if you hit a large boar at say 100 yds, and you think you killed it, but your round only knocked it out for a few seconds, and it gets up all pissed off and charges you, and you find out that was your last round, and you have to quickly climb the nearest tree, and you’re up in that tree for two hours until the boar gets bored, then you will bring a hand cannon next time.

What a sentence, huh?

5.56mm

A friend hunts pigs for pay here in by helicopter in central Texas. Either for farmers wanting them gone or wealthy types who have money to burn and want to pretend they are Air Cav for a couple of hours.
When hunting pigs for farmers, it’s is exclusively AR-15’s shooting expanding round 5.56. You get on a herd and put rounds on the pigs. These pigs wipe out freshly planted corn crops overnight. Very costly for the farmers.
By the way, the AR you mentioned? 308 not 30/06. They don’t make one in 30/06.
