An AR is the perfect pig gun. Using 5.56 hollow point or PSP for the kill. Its all about putting the required number of shots on the animal for the kill. When trying to eradicate a herd of 20+, you need a high capacity weapon with plenty of ammo. Stacks of loaded magazines required for killing the maximum number of these feral critters. Shooting one or two does nothing to reduce the herd.
I don't hunt wild pigs on any kind of a regular basis, but I have run across them. If I decided to take up pig hunting as a hobby or vocation I think I would consider springing for an M1 with high capacity mags, or maybe even an AR platform in .30-06. A company called Noreen either makes, or at any rate used to make, a very nice .30-06 AR for less than $2,000.
Maybe it'd be overkill, and I'd certainly spend a lot more money on ammo than those who use the standard AR, but dying at the tusks/hooves of a wounded, angrier-then-usual, wild hog is not on my bucket list.
We soak them in grapefruit juice to get rid of the gamey flavor. Mojo and sour orange juice work good too.
Slow cook over hardwood coals yum yummmm.
How do you guys do it?
