Back pain is a common problem. According to the World Health Organization, various diseases of the musculoskeletal system affect almost 80 percent of the population. Here is how your sleeping position can change your back pain. Everyone at least once in their life has dealt with back pain.
"Computers, office work, and other joys of modern society affect human health, says neuroscientist Matthew Walker, director of the Center for Science of Human Sleep at the University of California at Berkeley.
But there is another reason for back pain, which few people have thought of...

I always try to sleep on my left side. Right side gives me heartburn.
left.
I suffer from acid reflux(Take prilosec and Zantac) I sleep on two pillows on my right side.
To help control this unpleasant condition [acid reflux], put your arms in front of you and lie on your right side, says this doctor from Russia. What horrible advice. He must be plumbed the opposite from me.
But in a 2011 story, EverydayHealth says "don't sleep on your right side."That's more like it. From what I can visualize, you esophagus plugs into you stomach on the right side. Lying on your right side makes the sphincter work against gravity, and allows acid to leak down into the esophagus. Lying on the left side, the acid has to flow upwards to get to the esophagus, against gravity.
Bkmrk.
I have bulging disks, stenosis, and scoliosis in my neck and upper back.
Not fun.
Prilosec is a sanity pill for me.
I sometimes take Prilosec in the morning..then when I get acid, take a zantac and a tums..was told it is not good to mix so I now take two zantac’s and one tums per day. I eat the wrong foods, things that give acid but its hard to quit
I have complex sleep apnea and use a bipap machine - I switch sides during the night probably three or four times.
I try to avoid the foods that give me acid reflux at night, but when I don't it's baking soda or swallowing a whole tums tablet.
As for sleeping, I generally start out on my left, but have to swap a number of times, mainly from my left arm going numb. I turn, and grab a pillow to support the left arm. Maybe use a pillow between the legs to relieve pressure on the knees at that point.
I'll go back and forth, generally ending up on my right, remembering how I have to reach backwards for the alarm, more often than not.
My 3-year-younger brother slips with his fitbit. I'm jealous of his minimal sleep interruptions.
Best thing for acid-reflux is a cup of water with teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.
Totally works.
Yeah I know the potential side effects..basically all of those acid reflux medications have side effects and can cause harm to the kidneys, liver, etc..its better than getting Barretts..which my brother was recently diagnosed with(Caught it early stage) he had NO symptoms, for me I have constant stomach burn/pain and the doc did the endoscopy and found nothing..so he said its better to have a lot of pain and find nothing than have NO pain and be a ticking time bomb
Same here. If you look at chart of anatomy it is obvious why. I can sleep on right side after about 2:30 AM, though.
I take Zantac and Prilosec. Five pills a day. It’s like my crack. Was costing me a fortune for years. Then a new doctor wrote me a prescription. Now I just pay the copay. I was dumbfounded why no one had done this before.
I sleep on my right side. Will have to try the left!
It worked for me for three days then there was a nuclear explosion and I ended up in the hospital. Next time I will try tapering down the PPI as I begin To take ACV, not stopping it abruptly.
Here are some pictures.

I think its an issue of where the body of the stomach sits when you lie down. If on your right side, gravity drains it into your intestine. If on your left, your stomach has to push stuff uphill into the small intestine and its more likely to backup into the esophagus which is on the downhill side.
I used to acid reflux....bad.
Always slept on my left side to try and avoid it.
Lived on Prilosec daily to keep it under control.
Then, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and have to use a CPAP machine.
My acid reflux went away!! No more Prilosec needed. The CPAP machine kept the air passage open with positive pressure rather than a vacuum which is what was drawing the acid up. I no longer regurgitated stomach acid.
CPAP machine can be a kind of a pain in the butt at times, but the positive benefits have far out-weighed the “pain in the butt” side of it.
Left until midnight, then roll over.
Too much mucous. I used to wake up choking. Started sleeping upright in an easy chair and the problems instantly stopped. Surrounded by dogs on pillows, of course. The only major problem is that the larger dog wants to look out the window and as soon as I settle in for the night, climbs up and sits on the chair top, essentially sitting on my head. Cracks husband up. Eventually dog gets bored looking out into the darkness, climbs down and we can both get some sleep.
I found an article about back pain; it was a link in the main article:
