Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein approved an application last year to extend surveillance of former Trump campaign associate Carter Page, a secret Republican memo claims, according to law enforcement sources and news reports.
Rosenstein has been fighting the release of the memo from inside the Justice Department, sources confirm.
According to three people familiar with the memo, the FBI and Justice Departments (DOJ) application was based partially on research by investigator Christopher Steele, who contributed to a dossier containing unverified claims about President Trumps ties to Russia.

The RR/Sessions recommendation to fire Comey was a Deep State set up from the get go.
Will he be indicted
He wont if Sessions can quash it.
What I think they will do is cut from it what they think should not be released. And perhaps. Perhaps, we will get a portion of it released.
Only in the MSM will Trump not acting on the House's vote to release be obstruction, and Trump not acting on a subordinate's voluntary resignation be obstruction.
It's the same twisted logic that brought us ObamaCare, where not purchasing health care was still "commerce."

“Senators Press Podesta And Other Democrats About Dossier-Related Contacts”
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham sent letters this week to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, strategist Joel Benenson, and former DNC chairwomen Donna Brazile and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
The letters ask for communications records involving top Obama administration officials as well as several previously undisclosed employees of Fusion GPS...
The letters also seek information regarding any communications with two longtime Clintonworld hatchet men Sidney Blumenthal and Cody Shearer.
I may even watch the after SOTU comments by Maxine Waters, just to see if Rep Fredricka Wilson from FL is there, the one in rodeo outfits..! Warning: link below is pic!
Rosenstein, in the bizzaro world of DC Politics and the DOJ/FBI, is the ONLY person to have appointed Mueller, and the only person with control over him.
Of course, that’s after Jeff Sessions absolved himself of any responsibility over this deep state soap-opera.
Don’t forget the other Rat Andy McCabe, who left DOJ today.
The test I had in mind was credibility of the reporter. When the 4 page memo is released, says the reporter, Rosenstein will be fired.
I don't expect the firing of Rosenstein to happen immediately or simultaneously, of course.
Kabuki theatre. Rosenstein and Sesions bait the President into firing Comey, then Rosenstein immediately appoints Comey’s BFF to investigate the President for alleged obstruction of justice because he fired Comey on the recommendation of Rosenstein and Comey. If this was fiction it would never sell because the set-up is so transparent that it lacks suspense.
Does that mean that person can fire Mueller or replace him with someone not associated or friends with Comey??
LOL! What a clown show :P
Too bad we can’t make Rosenstein’s firing retroactive before he installed Mueller and so many other evil doers.
I know, it’s hilarious! I just cannot believe that political representatives would dress like that!
I like hats, in good taste, but never a freak show.

I believe the DAG must be career civil service. Rachel Brands is next in line to become the Acting DAG.
Brands and Rosenstein, BTW, were both college members of the Federalist Society.
Rosenstein was a Trump appointee. Now of course, Trump didn’t know him. He had to rely on Sessions (or other Republicans) for that recommendation.
We need an other category which this piece might well fit into - Fake News.
