Radio personality Shavonne Patrice Owens, 37, says she experienced weight discrimination firsthand when she applied for a daycare job in Huntsville, Alabama, two years ago. Despite having all the qualifications for the job, Owens says her friend a former employee of the daycare center in question (whose employment later terminated) told her the reason she was ultimately passed over for the job was because of her weight.
Owens, who was 525 pounds at 511 at the time of her interview with the daycare center, said that this incident hurt for a second, just for a second but I know who I am and because of my weight, it has restricted me from a lot of things. Looking back, she said shes lost out on other career opportunities (such as jobs in retail that would have required prolonged periods of standing), and she suspects her size was working against her.
Whats more, the standards for physical appearance are stricter for women than men. Women are more likely to be evaluated on their physical appearance, says Dr. Kelly Brownell, the dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. This, he explains, makes it even harder for overweight or obese women to contend with recruiters prejudicial biases against them.

“Skinny females who have never had children re horrible managers but insist on explaining their greatness every fay.

100% agree. ALL my woman skinny managers were b*tches. It was PMS day almost everyday and every time they had a fight with their boyfriends, ALL the males in the office were on her target sights. That’s why I hate women managers and thank God I have my own business where I dont have to put up with that crap again.
...Or eat all of the snacks. It’s for the children!
That is what I thought when I saw that picture.
I wannabe a Navy Whale. That’s the ticket. Just redefine the “Seals” so they’re more “inclusive.”
It could be a valid medical condition then. Maybe I should have said “most” overweight people. It seems there are always exceptions.
Fed.gov/DOD create a special branch - called the Navy Whales.
Prolly cuz the hot ones had all been sleepin’ with da boss!@ That’s the only reason they got there.
Actually, we recently found that if I both ignore the government food recommendations (ie eat a high fat diet, avoid many vegetables) and cut back, I seem to lose weight.
They used to say don’t eat butter, eat margarine. Now it turns out that margarine is worse, and butter not that bad after all. When can you trust the health experts when they don’t seem to know themselves?
Whale?
I know one who is a hefty exception.
She had no business being in charge of anyone.
For the most, I agree with you.
No, that's for 525-lb women who want to be submariners.
The wannabe seals of that girth are called "Navy Walruses".
If they want to be in the air corps, they're called "Huge Manatees" ...
My observation of severely overweight people if they have been obese since their early teens or before is that almost all can be counted on to be totally self centered. All ME and RIGHT NOW!
OMG! One of the BEST episodes, EVER! LOL!
This calls for Al Bundy.....

Gi Joe had the WHALE hovercraft.
Close enough.
Someone who’s already carrying 400 pounds is going to have a hard time carrying around more in a physically active environment.
You got that right! At 5 foot 5, 142 pounds, I am “overweight” by the standards of, say, Beverly Hills, so I was alarmed when I read the headline of this article. When I READ the article, I relaxed. I have sympathy for this woman, but she is not merely “overweight”.
