Only 15% of hiring managers would consider hiring an overweight woman

Radio personality Shavonne Patrice Owens, 37, says she experienced weight discrimination firsthand when she applied for a daycare job in Huntsville, Alabama, two years ago. Despite having all the qualifications for the job, Owens says her friend — a former employee of the daycare center in question (whose employment later terminated) — told her the reason she was ultimately passed over for the job was because of her weight.

Owens, who was 525 pounds at 5’11” at the time of her interview with the daycare center, said that this incident “hurt for a second, just for a second… but I know who I am and because of my weight, it has restricted me from a lot of things.” Looking back, she said she’s lost out on other career opportunities (such as jobs in retail that would have required prolonged periods of standing), and she suspects her size was working against her.

What’s more,“the standards for physical appearance are stricter for women than men. Women are more likely to be evaluated on their physical appearance,” says Dr. Kelly Brownell, the dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. This, he explains, makes it even harder for overweight or obese women to contend with recruiters’ prejudicial biases against them.

The super skinny one sounds like she has an eating disorder or self esteem issues. That is not healthy behavior, appointing yourself the food police.

I know-one of my aunts told us about that when we were kids-I wasn’t sure I believed her at first, but it became another reason to avoid the stuff just in case.

525 pounds??? No way that woman was physically able to do any job that required ANY amount of physical exertion. Period.

Severe diets slow down your metabolism so that your body thinks it’s starving and holds on to fat. This is no mystery at all, it’s purely hormonal. The same thing happens if you eat carbs and don’t get healthy fats. All calories are not equal.

Your busybody bitch coworker is an excellent illustration of why I only work with guys and prefer them as friends as well-my guy thinks that is weird but he is getting used to it....

I also used to smoke. In fact, step 1 on the path to losing weight was quitting smoking. It’s next to impossible to have the motivation to be active when you smoke.

The stomach reducing surgery is highly effective, an egg sized meal makes you full - although I think the opposite can happen - too small a stomach in developing kids. I have family members where their kids eat two bites and they’re finished - they’re also way small for their age. I don’t think they’ve ever had a full meal. So I think the stomach size is key to being healthy.

The hardest thing ever is actually losing weight.

Keep trying different tactics. Avoid sameness.
I hope something clicks for you.

I have some sympathy but 500 pounds?? That’s not an obesity issue, that’s a poor health issue.

I once had an interview and the immediate manager had blobs of fat on top of her blobs of fat. I would not have been able to concentrate with that around.

Quitting smoking for me was the path to gaining weight. I found myself 20 pounds heavier after a month or two. I basically switch from smoking to over eating. I managed to lose it again, though.

That does not appear to always be true-most of the guys I work with smoke to some extent-none of us smoke at work, though-it is a customer service thing, like not dropping F bombs in front of a customer-I smoke 2-4 cigarettes most evenings after dinner-I work on construction jobsites, where there is no job that does not require considerable physical activity-including mine. All individuals are different as far as energy levels-like the kids you describe with the tiny stomachs...

Glad these standards and some comments were not applied as a condition of Sarah Huckabee’s employment.

She has lost weight, and I always have thought she carried her weight well and looked good. However, she is not what most would define as thin.

House located near a city park matters for your health. Bigger the park is better. You can then get up out of bed, dress quickly, run out the front door, run for a half hour.
Run back home, jump in the shower. All without wasting time.

Second choice is buy an actual city map. Green places are parks. Make an adventure out of visiting a few each week for half an hour.

Dude, that's not merely "overweight". That's morbid obesity. I'm somewhat surprised that she was (is?) independently mobile.
