1) Good Christmas present for smart people. Somewhat complex sophistries are explained in simple terms. Its fun knowing how this stuff works.
2) This book is a guidebook to whats really going on in our public schools. Weird, unproven theories and methods are commonplace, such as Sight-words to teach reading, Constructivism to teach knowledge, Common Core Math to teach arithmetic, and so on. Once you understand these gimmicks, then you can fight back more successfully against the school system.
3) A group, whether 2 people or 20 people, can use this book to initiate and focus discussions. You can pick a chapter or even a single paragraph and say, Lets talk about this.
4) This is a how-to book that lays out the reform agenda that Trump should follow.

Generally speaking, the Education Establishment has been brilliant at keeping Americans ignorant and confused. Thats why public education in America is a swamp of mediocrity and dysfunction. Virtually no two people can have a helpful conversation about education because they are using the same words to mean different things, because each person has learned different snippets of theory, and because the Education Establishment churns out new jargon, disinformation, propaganda, and lies each year.

Bruce,
Do you want to save children...or...do you want to save the government schools?
If you want to save children from the pits of ignorance then recognized that the government’s socialist-entitlement schools can not be fixed or saved. They must be abolished.

I hope your book is a success. Bump.
Looks very interesting, Bruce, thank you for the link! Explanations of reading/common core math especially interest me as I have a teacher friend currently working through some sort of grant for a special program to teach reading/tutor for ‘special needs’ students, for my lack of a better term...those having problems with reading and comprehension. My friend often mentions ‘sight words’ which I cannot comprehend (no pun intended). She teaches at my former junior high (dating myself, I know). The number of students she works with is startling to me...how can so many not know how to read? When I ask, gets a little testy about how these students have ‘learning disabilities’. I was taught phonetics starting in 1st grade. I also recall my Mom railing about my being taught ‘new math’ back in the day & she was convinced I was harmed by it, to this day, lol! Very confusing for me when she helped me with homework because of the conflicts between how she was taught vs. how I was. I see this today with common core times a thousand via friends (I don’t have any little urchins of my own ;) How are there so many kids supposedly unable to learn math or reading once they reach K7, needing all these additional classes, costing a boatload of $? Baffling to me. I’m very interested in your book hopefully for layman explanations of this stuff to be able to discuss with my friend. None of our conversations about this subject make any sense at all to me as a non-teacher. I can’t help thinking to myself, no wonder they can’t read... Will you be releasing in kindle format?
you think they can be reformed ?
Bump for later!

Hope the book is a bestseller. Good luck.
I really appreciate your interest.
Just on the subject of reading, I’ve probably got 25 articles on the Internet.. I’m always looking for different ways to explain this murky stuff. Here’s one I’m very proud of because I never saw anyone else take this tack. http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2016/06/massive_k12_reading_failure_explained.html
Explaining complicated things in a simple way is what I most enjoy. Jefferson said never use two words if one will do. That’s a start.
I know there is a hardcover, paper, and e-book.
Thank you. I think everyone should know this is the nicest thing wintertime ever said to me. It must be the Christmas season.
Ho! Ho! Ho! :)
Thats the best explanation Ive seen for the superiority of phonics over whole language, sight words, whatever it is called this week.
Bruce’s material has been indispensable to me for fighting the nonsensical crap that is forced on my kids by the teaching establishment.
The first thing to notice is the intent to pigeonhole a kid as ADHD, or Asperger’s because of their faulty teaching methods. Once so labeled they then track them into lower performing classes.
My kids have had difficulties with reading and were significantly behind their peers. With general guidance and help from Bruce’s work in columns he’s written I have gotten my kids un-pigeonholed, and performing up to grade level in just under two years. You have to force them to teach the kids how to read. The old methods of phonics are eschewed for sight words. While adults read that way, beginning readers do not.
The one comment that Bruce made, was that sight words were like teaching the kids Chinese, and that Chinese was deliberately made difficult to keep the peasants unable to read. I have used his examples of the hieroglyphs and his ideas to beat down the edu-crats in my school district, and when they started actually teaching my kids phonetically, the kids “magically” were able to make it back to grade level in just under two years. My wife and I were significant contributors to this, but when the school district stopped fighting us, and started working with us to teach them phonetically, the kids progressed very rapidly.
Bruce is a hero in my book, and has helped me save my kids from a life of mediocrity. They are now excelling in reading, math, and science, are voracious readers of history. They are excited to be in school and are in the top 5% of kids in the state testing in all subject areas.
A heartfelt debt of gratitude to Bruce for being a champion in giving me the tools I needed to successfully advocate for my kids.

I don’t think that they are all bad.
.
For later
The only effective way to do anything about the situation is to get your children the hell out of there. Teach them at home.
you going to first have to dump the NEA before any meaningful reform is possible
