In July 1967, a fire broke out on board the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. An electrical anomaly had caused the discharge of a Zuni rocket on the flight deck, triggering a chain-reaction of explosions that killed 134 sailors and injured 161. At the time, Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War.
...The impact of the rocket had also dislodged two of the 1000-lb AN-M65 bombs, which fell to the deck, and lay in the pool of burning fuel between White's aircraft and that of Lieutenant Commander John McCain.

May explain a lot about John McCain
I was wondering if someone was going to post about this considering recent news.
Yep, I really think “Wet Start Johnny” McCain did indeed start this catastrophic disaster.

Disaster wherever John McCain goes - some even suggest that he caused this disaster by “wet starting” his jet on deck - a “trick” he enjoyed pulling.
We will never know for sure what John McCain did or did not do that horrible day...because any guilt would have been covered up by the Navy ASAP. This douchebag never should have been permitted to graduate from the Academy to begin with, and if he hadn’t been the son — and grandson — of an Admiral, he would have been thrown out or flunked out.
My Uncle was stationed on that beast.
A post on this LC piece was pulled the day the “McCain’s got cancer” sympathy meme was in full force on FR, and right before McCain slammed Trump that evening, a few days before the Healthcare vote:
The UnAuthorized Autobiography Of John McCain

What I wrote about LC was “pick out what you can use, toss the rest”.
If he was on there with the Manchurian McCaindidate, did he ever say anything about him?
There was a LOT of information floating around during his presidential run. Including previously unpublished personal accounts from crew members who were on deck that day. These were being scrubbed as fast as they were being put up. This huge scrubbing effort is what convinced me that it was probably true.
We know for sure what he did by the day following this disaster
He hitched a ride to Saigon with the NYT reporter who had helo’d out to report in the disaster
Yes its certain LCDR John McCain was the first officer from the Forrestal to jaunt off to a bar in Saigon on R&R while his ship was still burning
That much we know because of his interview
Any military guys here know that is very damning behavior to leave your buddies behind pulling all kinds of shifts to fill in damage control of a burning ship with hundreds dead and wounded
Sadly John missed the memorial service for his dead ground crew and squadron mates who died on the deck beside his plane when it dropped a bomb as he scrambled out of it
Watched “Trial by Fire” every year at Navy fire fighting school.
Few people can lay claim to effing up for half a century, but McCain can.
It was all to pad his resume for politics later.
McCain didn’t cause the fire on the Forrestal. And even if he did or didn’t drop his bombs on the deck, that wasn’t going to change things either way. Whether the bombs were on the wing pylon or on the deck, they were going to go off in the flames regardless.
At least you didn’t claim McCain started the fire by hotdogging with a hot start as some do.
I am no McCain apologist. But we just look nutty when we post these things.
I knew a former Navy Chief who did too, sadly he’s now gone as I’d love to hear his thoughts on McCain’s latest. He hated McCain with a burning passion and used the most colorful terminology which was once reserved for errant seamen in describing him.
Whether he caused the Forrestal fire or not, his record as a piss-poor pilot and equally execrable politician speak for themselves.
Please explain why you call him “Wetstart” and how that relates to the Forrestal fire. Just so we can get the conversation going.
I have long opined that Lieutenant Communist John McCain is guilty for all those deaths.
It must be nice to be the incompetent scion and grand-scion of an Admiral, who will see to it that their scummy sonny gets hero status no matter what he does, so that he can go into politics after a disastrous military career and live large off our tax dollars.
I agree with you on this, and his post military conduct is quite enough for us to damn him with conviction.
