Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with a particularly aggressive brain cancer called a glioblastoma.
If he does retire, how would his replacement be chosen?
In Arizona, where McCain is Senator, vacancies are filled by governor appointment rather than a special election. This means that Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, would choose McCain’s replacement.
Ducey is up for re-election himself in 2018, so it’s likely he will be very cautious about who he picks. Many are suggesting that Kelli Ward would be the safest choice, since she got 39.2 percent in her primary run against McCain. She’s already signed up to run for election again in 2018, but this time she will be running against Sen. Jeff Flake.

If one was going to be optimistic, you can figure with the treatment and recovery-time expected for a 80-year old guy...I would figure a minimum of six to eight months. They can forget about him quietly leaving or retiring, and just assume that it’s six months without him around in the Senate (thus killing off the health-care episode for 2017).

Minimum age for a senator is 30, MM is 32.

Exactly. That will paralyze the senate and you can forget about tax reform and the repeal of Obamacare. Not to mention that McCain is also the chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

Maybe they could pick a Repub for a change.

A random pick from the Phoenix phone book would have to be better than the Senators they have now.
I hope Ducey picks Kelly Ward, because I am not confident she can win in 2018, if she wins the primary. But winning as an incumbent may be an easier ticket for her.

Many of us have prayed for God to put this nation on a proper course. We prayed for the election of Donald Trump.
I voted for Kelli Ward. John McCain is a RINO who has repeatedly stabbed Arizona voters in the back.
I would like to see Kelli Ward in place of John McCain. There is justice in that.
Then we need to work hard to replace Jeff Flake, who has turned out to be a flake. He listened intently to John McCain and was mentored by him.

Or Cindy. Appointing the widow to fill out the term is a bipaartisan political tradition.
Do believe that Sarah Palin still owns property in Arizona. Her appointment would be what I would call justice.
