How Would John McCain’s Replacement Be Chosen?

Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with a particularly aggressive brain cancer called a glioblastoma.

If he does retire, how would his replacement be chosen?

In Arizona, where McCain is Senator, vacancies are filled by governor appointment rather than a special election. This means that Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican, would choose McCain’s replacement.

Ducey is up for re-election himself in 2018, so it’s likely he will be very cautious about who he picks. Many are suggesting that Kelli Ward would be the safest choice, since she got 39.2 percent in her primary run against McCain. She’s already signed up to run for election again in 2018, but this time she will be running against Sen. Jeff Flake.

What does owning property in Arizona have to do with anything?”

I was under the impression that one had to own property in Arizona and/or be a resident in order to run for public office.

Do believe that Sarah Palin still owns property in Arizona.

They won’t appoint a non-resident.

What makes you think she wants the job?”

I doubt seriously if she does. McLame is likely not to last out the rest of the term IMO. I would like to think that libs would just explode if she were appointed to the position for the remainder of his term. Just interesting “what if” scenario.

The US Constitution requires a senator to be an ‘inhabitant’ of the state he represents. States have been generous in determining ‘inhabitants’ (see Hillary and NY), and owning property there is probably enough.

“I’d love to see the U.N. leave the United States, and maybe the U.S. leave the U.N.” - Dr. Kelli Ward

Doc, I think I love you!

The politico story said Bossie said he would fund DeWit or the other guy, but he didn’t mention Ward.

It does not matter if both the media and the Dems support McCain. Heard on the news this morning that with snyone over 50, the percentage of survival rates is at 4%. McCain is 80.

For a state that prides itself in being a “conservative stronghold,” it certainly hasn’t shown itself to be so by reason of the people it sends to Washington.

As with other states, it's the metro areas that rule the roost. Here it is Phoenix and Tucson.
