At one time back in the day, inside most police cars were equipped with an M-870 shotgun. Then theres an odd ball patrolman with his AR-15 with .223 caliber. Which patrolman has the advantage?
The logic behind the usage of an AR stems from situations where a firearm needed for greater range than a shotgun.
So the debate begins, shotgun folks talk about having the knock down power to stop the fight with its 00 buck. ARs with its high velocity and more firepower in terms of 20 rounds 30 rounds magazine capacity.
Using either firearm we can make a perfect case as the weapon of choice to have for personal defense. In order for us to decide in an un-biased environment, a test should be conducted for validation. We can do this by pitting the two guns in a side by side shootout.
There needs to be a determination that each gun should be fired at the same target and at the same range. Because the idea is to ascertain some kind of combat effectiveness under stress, a time limit needs to be establish on each stage.
This test was based from Wiley Clapp test out on Gunsite where he had two Range Masters both skilled with the shotgun and AR go through this special course of fire. (Bill Murphy shotgun and Vince Morgan AR-15)
This course of fire were as follow: A shooter armed with respective firearm would engage a silhouette at various ranges. First at 15 yards, then 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. At the command of a whistle the shooter would have 3 seconds to fire off as many rounds as possible onto the target. Read the rest of the shot gun vs AR-15 test here. How bout you all, which would you go with?
An AR even in .223 will pass through walls and potentially injure or kill anyone outside the home...like a neighbor. This makes it inferior to a shotgun which can use a variety of loads that are far safer...but also very effective for home defense.
VEPR 12 with 25 round drum magazine. Get the folding stock model while you’re at it.
We couldn’t decide so we went with one of each and then added an AK74 for good measure. I will say there is nothing to compare in fear factor to the sound of a Mossberg 500 being racked in the dark. :-)
In-the-house go-to is Taurus Judge Public Defender. PDX1 ammo loaded in 2/410 and 3/45 long colt.
If the guy that breaks into your house, and is high on something like PCP. Then you certainly need something that will knock him down.
A 22 or even will not do that.

If you hit the bad guy, then he will not be getting up.
It will not matter what he is on.
BTW, that 12Ga shotgun if loaded should be kept cruiser readyi.e. no round in the chamber and safety on.
Did I miss the /sarc tag?
So I’m supposed to rack the slide to let the intruder know where I am, and that I’m armed?
Yeah, right!
Especially if he breaks in 3 times... ;)
I don’t know a single individual with a 15 yard hallway to their bedroom...........So the choice is clear, the shotgun for home defense.
Over kill certainly a 44 or a .50 cal Desert Eagle.
“When a man with a .45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with a pistol will be a dead man.”

That depends on who shoots most accurately and (usually) first.
There was the young man who successfully terminated three home invaders with an AR a couple of months ago. Apparently it had enough knock-down power.
Only if the man with the rifle shoots for the heart. You gotta shoot for the heart, Ramon. Shoot for the heart.
You have that right! (AND risk a possible FTF/jam malf just when one is not needed!)
We are talking about inside the home defense.
Rifles are better for long range. For instance, like hunting Deer.
Yes they will.
A 22LR in the knee will bring you down and have you withering on the ground, a .38 with hydra-shocks will flat out kill you.
Anything but that weenie .223......................lol!
I have my own range & am a pretty good shot. The best shooters only hit their target 50% of the time in a real- world shooting situation. I know. I’ve been through police Shoot/No-shoot simulators. To limit yourself to one shot is foolish.
