Question of the Day: Is Printing an Issue? (Conceal/Carry)

When you put your gun on in the morning and leave the house for the day, are you concerned about printing?

The above picture was shared with me on Twitter. Taken by a man in a checkout line behind a woman whose firearm is only being thinly veiled by her light pink t-shirt, she could obviously care less about printing.

It’s a topic of discussion I’ve had with several instructors and an issue I’ve had myself – should we be concerned with whether or not our gun “prints” through our clothing? Yes, but mostly because if you’re carrying concealed, the object is to actually conceal the firearm. Otherwise, you might as well open carry (and don’t get me started on that today).

I don’t worry about it too much any more. Most States that have Shall Issue or Constitutional concealed carry also allow open carry. From a legal perspective, it’s a non-issue. From a tactical perspective, printing is less of an issue than giving yourself away by constantly fussing with your clothes or being unseasonably dressed. IMO. YMMV. IANAL. IANAE.

I’m trying to be constructive here, but the woman in this photo is just plain ridiculous. That is not concealed carry and she ought to be cited for it.

Occasionally having your concealed carry print is one thing, it’s quite another that this person chose to wear a see-through, body-clinging top. No excuse. She had to know she was printing to the point of open carry.

Know what else helps not print? Lose some weight or wear larger clothing. Concealed means concealed!

I used to carry a .45 auto cocked and locked in a Bucheimer holster. When the weather was cool, I would wear a light jacket and neither I nor my wife could see the bulge.

On the other hand, I once was visiting a known criminal with a long history of minor crime. While I was talking to him one day, he asked what I was carrying. Some people are better than others at spotting them.

Advice from Liberals;

Can you carry when you’re flying/working?

Much less of an issue than it used to be since the state went to Constitutional Carry. Now a minor accident, flipped-up shirttail, what have you, doesn’t expose you to legal risk from an overzealous prosecutor. I still don’t like it, though. Concealed is concealed, and you lose the advantages of concealment if it isn’t.

What say you?

This might work for most gals:

I would suggest a hammerless small frame Smith, and a top just loose enough to allow a thumb to slid under the lower hem for a one hand draw.

Or maybe "a top just loose enough to allow my hand to slide under the lower hem..." ;)

Bra carry just seems like an easy way to get an unscheduled mastectomy.

I have 'winter' wear, and 'summer' wear.

Winter is usually a KAHR PM45 or a full size 1911 in an IWB holster with mag holder. A coat covers this setup pretty well.

Summer is a KAHR PM9 in a pocket holster. There is also a 2 inch S&W Mdl 64 that I ride around wearing.

Carrying concealed is a lot more thinking than one gun/holster combo.

“Most people dont pay attention to others and if a cop spots you you have a permit to carry. At most you will get a warning.”

In Austin, TX, I was detained, and charged, for “brandishing” because a police officer spotted a bulge under my suit. We’re talking a .380 Sig here, too, not some giant weapon. It was a UT Police officer, on a public sidewalk near (not on) the university.

This was after her drawing her weapon on me and making me kneel on the wet ground and wasting my time for about 8 hours getting printed, arraigned, etc.

The charge was promptly dismissed, but it cost me about $1500 in lawyer fees, and it took about three months to get my pistol back, the storage of which they charged me $165. My ammo was “lost.”

Try the Don’t Tread on Me Law Enforcement Concealed Carry Fanny Pack CORDURA NYLON - Black. No one has ever given me a second look, except a couple of other guys who were wearing one.

” have to carry a smaller caliber weapon with less ammo because I carry in front, and it crowds Johnson and the boys.”

That could be a problem. You don’t want to go off half cocked.

Yes. I'm an FFDO.

Federal Flight Deck Officer The Federal Flight Deck Officer program is run by the Federal Air Marshal Service with the aim of allowing volunteer pilots of commercial airline flights to carry firearms for the purpose of defending the flight deck against criminal activity.

I also have a WA permit to carry concealed. Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson are with me all the time and some Austrian guy on the flight deck.

Having been hassled for accidental printing in the past, I’m extremely cognizant of it. I buy one shirt size bigger than I wear to keep from worrying about it, or I carry a smaller profile sidearm if I have to wear tighter clothing.

Improper or lack of training and lack of trigger discipline would be the concern.
