The great Norman Podhoretz, in his masterful book, “Why Are Jews Liberals,” from whence this article is drawn, seems to conclude...that the Jews have only managed to exist through their adoption of “universalist” ideas—what I would call, Statist ideas—which supremely exist and shed their spoors mostly on the Left side of a leftist-stained table cloth.
We are talking civilly at table here, okay? No conspiracies of “Jew Lizard Masters From Space,” or the Rothschild Illuminati, or anything crazy, okay? We are just—for the moment—talking here.
Okay; here’s THE problem: even though pro-Jew and pro-Israel forces have moved to the right, the Jews have not.

The biggest factor IMHO is that the vast majority of American Jews emigrated from Russia and Eastern Europe and arrived in America with socialist or at least leftist views.
Around 1800, Poland was partitioned and disappeared for over 100 years. Russia swallowed most of the old Poland/Lithuania kingdom, bringing into Russia large numbers of Jews. Russia also occupied Latvia and Lithuania.
Suddenly, the Jews went from the relatively benign Polish administration to the harsh Czarist state, including several severe pogroms.
There was no outlet for political agitation in the Czarist state. Serfdom wasn't even abolished until 1861. People wanting to oppose the regime turned to anarchism and Marxism, which provided the only organized opposition to the regime. So, Jews arrived in America with a predisposition to leftist politics.

OK, here’s a couple of “reasons”:
1: Only a couple of generations ago their citizenry was rounded up and exterminated by the millions, in an organized, perfectly oiled machine. Good reason to not trust the “government”, like their “cohorts” do.
2: Survivors sought refuge in a tiny arrid strip of Desert land, surrounded by murderous savages, and fought to the death for a homeland. That’s why they should support, not condemn Israel, like their “cohorts” do.
3: Their murdered Parents, Grandparents, etc for the most part, marched to their slaughter like LAMBS. It couldn’t have been any worse, may have been better, if they were ARMED and prepared to defend themselves. Thats why they should stop screaming for gun control like their “cohorts” do.
Looking for any more reasons why they should vote differently than their “cohorts”?
These days liberal jews vote the same way that liberal catholics and protestants vote.
Orthodox jews vote the same way that conservative catholics and evangelicals (conservative protestants) vote.
The liberals have basically become the pharaoh party because when one becomes a functioning atheist then the highest power is the state.
It’s hard to find any so called ‘conservative’ jews that made it through this election with their reputations and careers intact.
Most we’re outed as gas-lighters and neverTrumpers.

I'd also suggest that there's another factor related to that. It goes back to the Gospels. The Jews at the time chose Caesar, and it seems like ever since then they've had an unhealthy, pathological fixation on giving authority to the state that belongs to God.
It never ends well for them, does it?
Given that I have read the comments on this thread and have already noted that my precious KC-Lion has been pinged, I’ll answer the question anecdotally.
The elderly Jews I have known over the years including when I was much younger all told me they voted with the Democrats because they thought the Democrats looked out for the “poor” much better than the rich Republicans, like Nelson Rockefeller for example.
Now that I am OLD, almost all of my Jewish friends vote Republican, including my classmates from elementary and high school, with whom I keep in touch.

My Jewish colleagues are also the only ones that can articulate their side. While I disagree with their position, they are very tough to prevail. They are not like the idiots on Waters World. I cannot figure out how they are so bright, so educated, and yet so liberal.
I suggest that just like many non-Jews, many Jews are ideologically inconsistent. But they vote some part of their inconsistent ideology, unlike non-Jews whose voting behavior is often no where close to any of their professed ideological positions.
However, Libertarian Jews are probably the most ideologically consistent of anyone in the US.
Jews, like many non-Jews, vote for the party and candidate who appears to be friendly and their friend. Historically Democrats have put on a friendly face for Jews, the Republicans have not. I remember how numerous Taft-Conservative Republicans tried to argue against Goldwater “because he was a Jew”, a strained argument at best.
I remember numerous Republican leaders scheduling campaign events on Jewish holy days in September purposely to block that faction allied with the their intra-party enemies from attending.
I remember other Republicans totally ignorant and dismissive of Jews who take their religion seriously, especially in September.
Historically, Democrats never make these stupid mistakes.
And then, of course, there are the conspiracy conservatives who attack Jews for being the great conspiracy, and for just loving money at any cost and nothing else, and for killing Jesus, and for all kinds of things.
But behind all of this is the Judeo-Christian traditions found in the Scriptures.
The first political statement:
God asks Cain a question. Cain does not like the question and does not want to answer it. So Cain answers a question with a question that creates a false paradigm.
. . . . AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER?
Of course, the orthodox Judeo-Christian answer is:
No, You are your Brother’s Brother. You are not his keeper.
But both many Jews and many Christians prefer the answer that yes, they are their Brother’s keeper. Both those claiming to be Jews and those claiming to be Christians follow the religion of Cain.
First Jewish Nation:
After 40 years in the wilderness, Joshua stood at the Jordan River about to lead the Jews into the promised land and create their own nation. Joshua declared the first Judeo-Christian “Constitution”.
“Choose ye this day whom ye will serve. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
That one statement is the foundation for our Constitution. Joshua defined Judeo-Christian Freedom and Judeo-Christian small government and libertarianism. It is the basis for the Catholic doctrine of Subsidiarity.
Government starts with the individual and self-control, self-government. Then the first level of societal government is the HOUSEHOLD. This is where we get: As long as you live under my roof, you will obey the rules of this house.
Prior to King Saul, government beyond the family was voluntary. From Joshua to Samuel, most Jews voluntarily submitted themselves to religous authority. But they frequently strayed from that voluntary submission.
Then the people told Samuel they wanted a King, just like all the other nations around them had. Samuel warned them of all the evils of a government with the power of coercion. But the people insisted (democratically voting for a King).
So they had Saul, then David. David’s reign was so impressive that the Jews fell in love with the idea of a kind, wise central government. Ever since David, a strong theme in the Jewish community is that if people just need to find another David, another strong leader who uses coercion effectively and wisely.
Of course, David had his faults. So they compare Bill Clinton to David and say: Well at least Bill didn’t send anyone to die in battle so Bill could get his wife.
Most Jews are really fair about this and will allow the pecadillo of a Republican who they consider basically compassionate but with a personal flaw.
The Jews have had many experiences over the millenia. Some Jews remember and place more emphasis on one event; other Jews on another event.
But ultimately, it all goes back to the religion of Cain, the libertarianism of Joshua and the good coercion of David.
Most all events since then reflect a twist on those three.
