At least it’s being observed.

Geez, talk about a bump on a log. Chafe? Really? You sound like an unhappy liberal. Offended by anything.

My wife and I are both veterans. We're retired and raise beef cattle on a farm. Except for spending a few minutes this morning putting small American flags out at the family cemetery on the graves of military veteran family members, we will neither observe nor celebrate the day.

It is not a "holiday" for us. Raising cattle doesn't lend itself to time off "celebrating" or "observing" holidays. There are no holidays on the farm. One day is like any other. I have a long list of chores to do today that one could not possibly call observing or celebrating or anything else but working.

I think your complaint is unwarranted. Let people celebrate or observe or mourn however they want. It's not up to you to decide that.

Thanks, I understood that. I do see the point, but use today to remember those who have fallen for the US. Terrible, but worthy.

Thank you.

I will always consider the source for such commentary.

You speak from combat experience, and I agree with you in respect to your happiness as a Veteran.

But my beef is with those who use the word “Happy” out of pure ignorance. “Happy” in respect to a holiday, for these people, is the same as saying “Happy Birthday,” “Happy Anniversary,” “Happy New Year,” etc.

It’s a thin line, I admit.

But I wish promoters, webmasters, administrators would just think a little before they type.

I will give your reply (thank you) more weight because of your status as a combat veteran, and I will certainly reconsider.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service and sacrifice.

God Bless you

Memorial Day is always a somber day for me. I think of the friends I lost during my 2 tours in RVN.

I have a little thing that I do every time I see a soldier in uniform, whether I be at Costco, the airport or where ever.
I go up to them and say, “I just cannot believe this, today is my day to hug and thank a soldier and here you are.” I get the biggest hugs.
One time at the Colorado Springs airport there was about 7 soldiers, pulled my trick and got the hugs.
Grand daughters were with me and asked me if today was really my day to hug a soldier, told them everyday is my day to hug and thank a soldier.
God Bless our military.
MAGA!!!!

Please see my reply to “HotHunt.”

I cannot decide for others but, thanks to the sacrifice of the living (including you and your wife - Thank You) and the dead, I can voice an opinion.

Thanks for yours.

There is nothing ‘happy’ about Memorial Day. It is about respect and thankfulness for those who gave all, to protect our freedoms in this great country. And I included ‘all’ in my messaging as I would like to point out that is it good in our country that we have ‘days off’ that actually mean something. Today in the UK is a day off, but only referred to as ‘Bank Holiday’. Most days off in the UK are ‘Bank Holidays’ rather than ‘Presidents Day, ‘Memorial Day’, ‘4th of July’, Labor Day’ or Thanksgiving. They do honor Veterans on Remembrance Sunday (around our Veterans Day, which is no longer a day off here). And Christmas is always a day off, as is the day after Christmas, Boxing Day (the day that the people give ‘boxes’ or compensation to the people who work for them, such as the ‘dustmen’, etc). I don’t know if the practice is still actually done on Boxing Day, but it is nice to have the day after Christmas off. I’m just pointing out that in a Socialist country, the reasons for honoring with a day off have fallen by the wayside and are now just called Bank Holidays. It is good to remember those who sacrificed for our country; it is good to have a Memorial Day.

I’ll say this, it’s just my way of thanking a Veteran for their Service. If you have donned the Soldiers Uniform in it’s many variants, especially if you have volunteered to do so or as many in our past were drafted and served our Country with Honor, with Respect for our Constitution and Flag, never take your duties lightly. You may have only been a cog in the machine but every cog must work towards Victory. You did your assigned duties as many millions of US have, without which we would have already perished as a Nation. If you took your Oath seriously and served with Honor, I for one salute you! Carry on!

I couldn’t believe there was a business with a marquee that stated “Have A Happy Memorial Day” - now come in and buy a mattress (I added that last part).

I am the same way. I served 20 non-distinguished years in the Navy. I don’t feel bad about getting my retirement or medical benefits, because that was just part of the deal. I am, however, frequently hesitant to claim veterans benefits at stores, restaurants, etc. because there are so many much more deserving than me.

The purpose of this post is specifically not to elicit comments to dispute what I wrote. I’m not looking for sympathy, just expressing a personal feeling.

I would say, though, in your case, you’re overly self critical. I’m sure serving in Vietnam in any capacity was not a fun thing to do.

Am well aware of the meaning of "to commemorate," "to observe," etc. - but what alternative to "Happy Memorial Day" do you propose?

Fill in the blank: "......... Memorial Day!"
