Trump wants NASA to send humans to Mars pronto — by his second term ‘at worst’
The Washington Post ^ | April 24, 2017 | Joel Achenbach

What we are reporting here isn't fake news. But it doesn't feel exactly like real news, either. It's in that foggy realm of Trump news in which everything is slightly ambiguous and wobbly and internally inconsistent and almost certainly improvisational and not actually grounded in what you could call “government policy.” What happened was: Trump called the International Space Station and talked to astronauts and, in passing, mentioned that he's going to send Americans to Mars, and soon, like really lickety-split.

Trump was marking the historic achievement of astronaut Peggy Whitson, the commander of the International Space Station, who set a record for most days in space by an American astronaut. (Also on the call from the Oval Office were Ivanka Trump, who spoke about the administration's efforts to encourage women and girls to get involved in STEM fields, and astronaut Kate Rubins.)

During the call, the president asked Whitson and fellow American astronaut Jack Fischer a question:

TRUMP: “Tell me: Mars, what do you see a timing for actually sending humans to Mars? Is there a schedule and when would you see that happening?”(continued)

I heard obama wanted to go to Uranus.

He says that to all the boys.

I’m more in favor of a permanently manned (and ultimately self-sufficient) base on the moon. But a mission to Mars would be good too. A group will have to spend at least a year there waiting for the next launch window to come back. Think of all the discoveries that can be made in that time.

I was, for a brief time, acquainted with the author.

I won't say he's absolutely batshit crazy ... I'm not a psychiatrist, so I'm not qualified to judge. I will say that he could be source material for several psychology Ph. D. dissertations ...

I volunteer Hillary and Pelosi go first.

Beat me to it.
I have a whole list of progressives that I'd like to 'volunteer' to put on that (one way) trip to Mars.
They can create their own Socialist Utopia.
As an added bonus, they won't have to deal with those nasty CO2 emissions, nor worry about Global Warming ...

😾. Like you discover you absolutely can't stand your crew mates. Despite pre launch evaluations? That kinda discovery?

I believe if it were put about that Mohammad dreamed
of flying to Mars on a magic horse, Islam would already
have claimed it.

Not going to happen. It will take a decade of setup probably just to have humans orbit Mars.

Mars will get people killed unless they take extreme precautions.

“We do this, and the other thing not because they are easy - but because they are hard”

If this line were spoken today, media would only point out the poor grammar.

...oh yeah and to add to my other post - Just where the hell will the astronaut get 9 months of air?? We inhale 11,000 liters of air per day or 2,906 gallons. What machine can produce that much recyclable O2?? Think about that: It would have to separate O2 from CO2 at a rate of 458 liters per hour or 121 gallons. If that was possible we wouldn’t need gasoline anymore, just produce hydrogen from water if they can separate molecules so effectively like that.

Just what I was thinking, there is really no purpose for going to Mars other than to say we’ve been there. Plus it’s an insane amount of distance, you’d have to wait until it is in the right position, then pack enough supplies such as food, water for 9 months and that is just one way! Think how much food and water just one person goes through in 9 months. To me it would be a suicide mission unless we found some way to put a person into hibernation.

There may be a better way. I've heard that Ad Astra's VASIMR engine could make the trip in a few weeks if we could use a nuclear power plant to drive it.

Somebody needs to brief the Prez.

We are under a quarantine—Mars landings are not going to happen.

As one of the earlier posters said, folks are going to get killed trying to do this stuff.

“A group will have to spend at least a year there waiting for the next launch window”

Maybe we should think about sending unmanned supple ships to Mars. A year’s worth of supplies, living habitat, etc..

A year isn’t that long (actually two years including the transfer there and back). What if Lewis and Clarke found they couldn’t stand one another? I’m sure whoever they pick will be professional enough to not let it get the best of them.

“It’s hard to know if Trump was entirely serious (it’s possible he was just joshin’) or if he even has been briefed on the current NASA human spaceflight program. He may not know where Mars is. (Who does, really? You know it moves around a lot.)”

This is all you need to read to understand the point of this “story”. Same old same old.

I see no pressing need to put humans on Mars. Robots? sure. But men? why? It’s an immense waste of money. We would be much better served spending the money building a large manned space station-something about the size of an aircraft carrier.
