Apple is currently hard at work on a completely rethought Mac Pro, with a modular design that can accommodate high-end CPUs and big honking hot-running GPUs, and which should make it easier for Apple to update with new components on a regular basis. Theyre also working on Apple-branded pro displays to go with them.
These next-gen Mac Pros and pro displays will not ship this year. (I hope that means next year, but all Apple said was not this year.) In the meantime, Apple is today releasing meager speed-bump updates to the existing Mac Pros.

Windows 10 is the best! Not really but it is all we got....
You can restore to a Mac running the same OS level, but in it does not require the same computer. There are ways of restoring even with a different OS level. But they require jumping through some hoops. I always thought it was stupid to link it to the OS level.
My 2009 MacPro won’t die. It is old fashioned thinking to want to keep a machine til it breaks. Maybe need to rethink this. Upgrading it to Sierra will strain its creaky joints so maybe it’s time.
When they get slow, they are dying. I’ve noticed this Mac runs a tad hot. Over time, heat degrades the components. An 8 year-old machine is admirable but they tend to die abruptly.
This Mac was free so I try not to complain. But it is too tempting to turn it into an expensive Windows machine.
Agreed. I love my 2003 Dell desktop that won’t die. But XP isn’t safe, so the old thing is really a typewriter with advanced capability. Which is ok, but used less and less. When I die, they’ll have to pry my hands lose from my iPad1. It’s my most used device among the collection that litters the house.
I periodically check on the new iMac, but no luck. Any ideas on when that might happen?
There you go then.
You do not seem to have read the article ... unless you have insights into the Apple design process, there is no where stated anything about modular design.
The Mac Pro they talk about will be extremely upgradable.
They only said the Mini is still important part of their line up. So it is not dead.
Some of us do not want to plug in some devise that draws 900 watts as the older Pros do.
Actually "modular design" is in the first sentence you posted. :-)
I have a fairly high level of interest in this and have read a few articles. A different one had a lot more quotes from the Apple folk, among them:
As part of doing a new Mac Pro it is, by definition, a modular system we will be doing a Pro display as well. Now you wont see any of those products this year; were in the process of that. We think its really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and thatll take longer than this year to do. - Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schillerhttps://techcrunch.com/2017/04/04/apple-pushes-the-reset-button-on-the-mac-pro/
Really? It was Apple tech support that told me I couldn't do it. I sure tried.....Maybe my new iMac was using a newer OS, and that's why I couldn't do it.
Sorry. It has been a very long and confusing day without any real results.
Spec wise it is dead, they made it impossible to update memory and it is no walk in the park to change a hard drive either. I have an i7 core 4 Mini and it runs pretty well especially if you use an SSD, the newer ones are dogs in comparison. If you need one get the older ones they are a much better value.
I was referring to the hinted refresh some time down the road. The current one yes dead, but there will be seems like something in the future; I think AAPL has seen the light on upgradability - at least I hope so.
When they start getting old, the fans are getting clogged with dust, and start running slowly. You can open them up and clean out the dust that's clogging the fans. Sometimes the fan is just getting worn out and needs to be replaced. However, if you are not handy with opening an iMac, the technician costs to do that may be more than an old iMac is worth and it will be time to replace it.
I owned several of these and all failed or were corrupted.
The iMac I use has served since 2011. Free updates, no anti this or that protection required. Free tech advice. Great photo handling.
LOL this is an Apple/Mac thread -- you're very unlikely to get much interest for your Windows suggestion. You could probably talk about ripping Windows out of the Acer and installing Linux, that might get some interesting comments...
But if you're truly happy with Windows, let me encourage you to join my Windows Ping List. If you want to get a feel for what kinds of threads get pinged, search on keyword "windowspinglist". And let me know if you want on the list.

I am trying to convert the mac disciples.
Convert them over to the dark side.
I installed OS serra a couple of weeks ago to my 27” iMac and there was a glitch somewhere as it became unstable if I put it to sleep for 2 or 3 hours it would require a shutdown and reboot. My mac guy took it to his shop to wipe the had drive and do a clean install. He also took my external backup drive...FINGERS CROSSED
