The behind-the-scenes story of the staredown between a few dozen conservative true believers and a novice president.
....In a conference room in the Rayburn House Office Building, the group met that evening and made a secret pact. No member would commit his vote before consulting with the entire group not even if Trump himself called to ask for an on-the-spot commitment. The idea, hatched by Freedom Caucus Vice Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), was to bind them together in negotiations and ensure the White House or House leaders could not peel them off one by one. Twenty-eight of the group's roughly three dozen members took the plunge. Three weeks later, Republican leaders, as many as 25 votes short of passage, were forced to pull their bill from the House floor. This is a defining moment for our nation, but it's also a defining moment for the Freedom Caucus, said group leader Mark Meadows about a week before the doomed vote was scheduled. I don't think there's a more critical vote for the Freedom Caucus than this." The unpublicized pledge sowed the seeds of Fridays collapse of ....

I would hope not!
If the success of the Trump agenda actually depended on the success of a "steaming pile" (in your own words), then the Republican Party and White House leadership is filled with rank amateurs.
This is exactly the mindset that brought about disastrous midterm elections for the Democrats in 1994 and 2010.
The Freedom Caucus consists mostly of ex Ted Cruz supporters & Never Trump. Don’t believe they will ever go along with the Pres.

1) Shutdown Future Obamacare enrollment.
2) Restore the Insurance marketplace to pre Obamacare days.
3) Let the Obamacare enrollees continue until the end of their policy.
4) Everybody can than select a plan suited to their needs.
5) Retain the pre existing condition clause through their current Obamacare Insurer.
This is simply not true.
There wasn't even a consensus among Republicans in the House and Senate on this bill. For all the talk about how the GOP leadership in the House felt obligated to tailor their bill around the lack of a veto-proof GOP majority in the Senate, the reality is that the House couldn't even come up with a bill that would have gotten 50 Republican votes in the Senate.
Why do you think the Democrats gave such muted opposition to the House bill? They were hoping beyond their wildest dreams that the Republicans would pass a "TrumpCare" bill that would destroy them in the 2018 midterm elections.
As one gets to be "too soon old, too late smart", who knows better about what the potential issues of concern are with one's own body?
Ryno talked the talk but didn't walk the walk, Trump did what Presidents due to support the Speaker but Ryno came up short, bad Ryno. This freed Trump to do what he wants.
Hi Jim,
I’m getting pretty lost trying to keep up with all the different views regarding free market plans and government plans. I’m sure you know much more than I do at least.
That said, my brother is 58 years old, single, from what I gather he makes about $30,000 a year as a carpenter. He was never covered by his employers until he wasn’t and couldn’t afford insurance on his own. He has never really had health insurance until ObamaCare got rolled out.
I don’t know the details of his plan, but he has already had a reason to use it; nothing serious, but enough to mess his life up if he had to go fully out of pocket.
What would his situation look like if ObamaCare was repealed and the free market was in play? Would the free market solutions you are talking about kick in right away and, most importantly, would they be affordable?
Uh, no.
That kind of mindset is 'effing disastrous.
I believe it was Steve Bannon himself who said (publicly)some time ago that it was important for people to stay engaged in the political process and keep Trump in line ... because there was always a chance that he'd wander off and do something ridiculous.
I'm sure Trump is getting an earful of crap from many of his senior staff members right now.
And there's nothing wrong with this.
It's great to have a President who once lost nearly a billion dollars and recovered to become even better and stronger at the end ... but he ain't going to be doing that with my billion dollars.
Plus, by the third kid, Dr. Mom has a pretty good idea of what is going on with kids.

Takes two sides to disagree.
Ryan and Trump are just as much to blame as the FC.
And I notice that you forgot to mention the Democrats and Obama who voted for ACA.
I’m glad people did not have that attitude when Bush tried to jam amnesty down our throats twice.
Repost as necessary to get good traction...
We've had enough smoke and mirrors.
Because Trump is not and has never been conservative.
Me too. Losing patience quickly. He is morphing into the swamp.
Tell me about it. My wife and I went without insurance for twenty years. Both uninsurable due to preexisting conditions. Had to pay for everything out of pocket, but at least we got discounts. If it gets unbearable, might have to look to the county or state for relief if there’s no other way, but the constitution prohibits the federal government from getting involved. Yeah, I know. Johnson pushed through the unconstitutional fed gov socialist medicare program for the old and disabled, but at least we were able to fend off unconstitutional fed gov intrusion into private health insurance for the general public for 50 years since... until Obama. We need to repeal this unconstitutional monstrosity before it bankrupts the entire industry and the nation. The federal government cannot “take care” of everyone and was never intended to.
At this time POTUS needs our 100% support or we will get little of what we want. It’s that simple. The RINOS and Dems will seize the entire beltway agenda from a weakened POTUS and we will get nothing.
But go ahead and keep on fighting old battles if you want and signalling your pure conservative virtue. I’m can see you’d rather gum flap and type than have a wall built, etc.
From my experience, the only type of insurance that really operates under "free market" conditions is life insurance. That's because it's a one-time claim resulting from an event (death) that is rarely subject to any kind of dispute.
Other forms of insurance all have their place in a free-market economy, but it's naïve for anyone to act as if the purchase of an insurance policy is subject to the same kind of market forces as the purchase of an iPhone or a box of corn flakes.
It’s not just about free markets, its also about a governing majority. Many of the moderate members in favor of the bill and who opposed the HFC demands are in states where Hillary won and who are up for election a year from now. If they lose their seats there may not be a House Republican majority come 2018.
Many of the “purists” here on FR have this damn the torpedoes gusto. Well, the Trump Hindenburg just took a strike thanks to the obstinacy of the HFC.
