"I was in a funny position to be cheering for the thing, but I was really tickled to see the dive bombers really pasting them even though they were in pretty bad shape. But during the afternoon after they pretty well burned themselves up, the larger one close to me there, the Akagi, sank just after dark, the cruisers raked her with fire finished her off, and the other two, the Kaga and the Soryu, burned all night, but they didn't necessarily explode. As a matter of fact, the Japs were there trying to put the fires out. I could seem them playing around, searchlights, picking up people and trying, I think they were trying to salvage these two ships; but the explosions that I heard the next morning turned out to be our submarines putting torpedoes into these things and they finished them off. That was early the next morning just as dawn was cracking."

A quick Google search for ‘ugliest aircraft carrier’ supplies a number of suggestions. The IJN is recognized as having entire classes of ugly carriers. I’m still looking for the unmistakeable pantsuit pennant hoisted on her ratlines to find the actual ship.
I understand your point. A close friend pointed out to me that my primary personal failing is that I assume others are like me (rational, well mannered, polite, kind, etc).
Yes, President Trump is speaking to those he can persuade. I have been one of those.
I see him as wanting to lay out a very simple argument for what is about to happen with some media outlets. I warned you, I told you flat out the news was fake. I told you that the leaks and your role in the leaks was illegal. You persisted. You lose.

Midway (movie) Victory Scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwLyIMqfbf0
Great post.
“Midway has many great stories.”
Yes, Japan sent out a batch of search planes (8 or 16) and the one that would have spotted the US fleet had mechanical troubles and had to turn back.
Japan was already running short of experienced carrier pilots at Midway. They had to pull some instructors for the battle.
A US submarine was pivotal, maybe critical, to the American victory at Midway. Discuss.
Like the Japanese at Midway and the Confederates at Gettysburg, the Media is suffering from “Victory Disease”.
They cannot accept that they can lose. Like that dipship Joe Scarborough said, yesterday, “You can’t beat the media!”
Well folks, the media is well on its way to the bottom.
Sorry, I dropped an “N”. Great post!

The only thing I know about Japanese WW II ships is the old mnemonic:
"The Nips' big cruisers' forward stack
is always fat and falling back."
To paraphrase Hillary,
"Beat? What, do you mean like a red-headed stepchild?"
Welcome to FR Peter.
Here is the website for the Battle of Midway Round Table.
An excellent site for all things Battle of Midway.
I also recommend two relative new books about the Dauntless dive bomber squadrons of the Pacific fleet from Pearl Harbor through the conquest of Guadalcanal by Stephen L. Moore: “Pacific Payback” and “the Battle for Hell’s Island.”
A most excellent first post, and cool screen name to boot, with stupendously cool theme music playing in the background.
Yeah. :)
A heartfelt welcome to FR.

Thank you, GreyFriar. Indeed, thank you all.
LOL! I dunno, take your pick. The Akagi maybe?
Divorce yourself from your emotions.
No way. People who justify everything they believe with their feelings will never divorce themselves from same. It’s like telling a Believer to divorce himself from the Word of God.
The confluence of mistakes that led to a great victory has always fascinated me.
If the Devastators, et al, had not been, in succession, so ineffective, and the Dauntlesses had not been late, then the Zero-Sens might not have been on the deck when the fatal attack came.
P.S.
This single battle has always been used to libel the Brewster F2A as a wretched design. The aviation historians are typically unjust in their character assassination of that aircraft. I may write a monograph about that someday.
Amazing. I was just considering these parallels yesterday. Trump’s smashmouth takedown of the media was like sinking three carriers. High stakes. high payoff.
Yeah I get you, but Hawaii 5-0 is right up there. I’d be hard pressed to finally judge between the two.
