875 Yard Elk Shot
Cal Sportsman ^ | 11/6/2016 | J Hines

Posted on 11/06/2016 9:25:16 AM PST by w1n1

This hunter nailed an 875-yard elk killer shot with a rifle chambered in .308 Winchester on day two of their hunt.

These hunters noticed a herd of elk feeding on a hillside two canyons away. After observing the herd for a little bit, the hunter selected a yearling cow out of the herd to shoot. He passed on the larger cows because he knew they would have a heck of a hike to get the meat out of the woods afterwards. In any case, they settled in, and he squeezed off his shot, which resulted in an 875-yard elk kill. View the video here, would you have taken this shot?

Forgot to add the required UN insult. The UN can take their “ban” and KMA right at the brown eye. This video and various military sniper video show exactly why the UN and other such collections of despots seek gun control.

Two canyons away? How long did it take that hunter to get to the animal? How hot was it?

Could the hunter get to the animal before the meat was bloodshot and ruined?

These are all things, in my mind, worth considering before one takes that length of shot. That has nothing to do with the accuracy of the rifle and the shooting ability of the hunter.

Still, an 875-yard single shot kill is pretty damn impressive. I especially liked the guy's breathing discipline. Extremely well-trained and very skillful sniper, no doubt about it.

Do NOT piss this guy off... LOL

Probably should qualify that statement. Using special match grade long range projectiles, 223 can compete at 1000yds.

That's better. I have made good hits at that range with a .30 '06, but would never try anything beyond 500 with a .223.

I used to be able to hit a silhouette at 350 yards 6 out of 8 times with a M14 in the standing position with peep sight. The only bi pods were on the M60 machine gun and no scopes. You are getting out to a range where there is not enough energy in the bullet to legally take that shot. I would not do it with a 308

They commented that it was a “balmy 32 degrees”, and they were on horseback.

That’s a lot of yard elk to shoot. What are they going to do with all of them?

What’s a yard elk anyway?

The meat will be fine for a few hours...back in the old days you ate meat starting to go south

You just cooked hell out of it

I’ve eaten deer dead for 6-7 hours in the Deep South where I live....60s

It was fine.....

I’ve seen gutted deer hang two days in 70 degree weather before processed in Texas hill county

Elk hunting by gun is usually cool

Or cold

I think gun hunts in New Mexico are October to Jan 1st

In Chama right now it’s 45 at noon

Avg October high is 59 and low high 20s

That’s typical lower 48 warm zone for elk

Northern New Mexico

On topic I would never shoot game that far

I have a custom AR. Stainless DPMS lower, Lake Engineering upper with 28” 1/7.75 twist. I used a 50 mm Leupold at 10x. 80 gr Sierras. The guys in the pits said they were all supersonic at 1,000 yds.

Unethical. He did not place his shot at that range. He hit “the elk”.
And in playing junior sniper, he forgot that at that range, a 168 grain bullet of the best BC will still give him about a 22 foot hold over. It arrives at about 1340 FPS with 670 ft lbs of energy.
Many states have a 1000 ft lb minimum for deer. 1500 is the normal recommended for taking elk cleanly.

Essentially, he shot it with something about 2/3 the power of a 30 carbine. His whole hunt speaks of “lazy”. Shot a small one because it’ll be too hard to carry a big one out. Too lazy to stalk closer than 875 yards.
People like to pretend they are snipers or something, but this isn’t shooting humans in a war where a wound is hunky dory as a kill.

IIRC mid flight the bullet was 26 or 28 ft above line of sight. I would never shoot an animal with it. If I were personally to anticipate shooting an elk at that range I would take a 300 Win Mag but I probably would not even go there. When I was young and dumb I popped a shot at a herd of about ten deer that we’re clumped at a bit over a thousand yards and got lucky and dropped one . My buddy called it the “Billy Dixon” shot.

It’s alright. I’m just messin wit ya.

Speaking in metric just sounds a bit pretentious in a conversation amongst everyday Americans, most of whom think in feet and inches.
