Thomas Sowell, the legendary conservative economist and Hoover Institution fellow, announced on this morning's Ben Shapiro Show that "even though Donald Trump has no coherent vision that looks that promising," he will "vote against Hillary Clinton" in November.
Sowell has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump throughout and beyond the GOP primaries, and his decision centers around the enduring legacy of the next president's Supreme Court appointments, which he believes have the potential to subvert constitutional law and undermine specifically the First and Second Amendments. Here is the full text of Sowell's comments:
Well, my preference would be to leave the office vacant for four years and to wait for better things than 2016. Unfortunately that's not one of the options that we have. I think it's going to be dangerous and not merely bad if either of them becomes president. The question is, where's the danger greatest and, more importantly, most long-lasting? And I think that even though Donald Trump has no coherent vision that looks that promising, Hillary Clinton does have a vision, and it's a world in which she can, by determining who's on the next Supreme Court--for the next 50 years law in America can be undermined. The First and Second Amendments we can write off if she's allowed to put a majority on that court. And so long after, whether it's Clinton or Trump, long after they leave office, the people they put on the Supreme Court will be a legacy for the next generation and perhaps put an end to constitutional law in this country. And on that basis, I would vote against Hillary Clinton.
I was beginning to worry about the good Doctor.
He’s come around to the ABH (anybody but her) viewpoint slowly.
OH Boy! I was waiting to hear from this guy before I made up my mind on who to vote for.
I used to think very highly of Mr. Sowell.
I don't understand where his head or his heart is. This man voted for McCain and Romney, for gosh sakes!
hillary is bad enough that I would vote for Mickey Mouse instead of her.
Thomas Sowell, an affirmative action pseudo-intellectual who has fallen short...
What’s the danger of a Trump Presidency? Help me out here.
Another open borders think tank conservative heard from.
If it took him this long to figure that out - and that what applies to Clinton as an individual largely applies to the corrupt status quo as a whole - then his role has gone from opinion writer to historian.
that’s mighty w***e of him
...even though Donald Trump has no coherent vision that looks that promising, Hillary Clinton does have a vision...
But Hillary was the dangerous one. She had an agenda. She wanted to wield that presidential power to create a liberal utopia/nightmare. I consider her the single most dangerous person to ever run for president.
She’s serious. She could be a true despot that would make Obama look like a pushover in the “I’m gonna do it my way” corner.
And she’s been grooming it for decades. I think she sees herself as superhuman or, more accurately, sees the rest of us as canon fodder.
I don’t really have any reason to think that Trump is a small government type. He’s a lower tax and lower regulation guy. But for practical reasons as the opposite hurt the economy. But I don’t hear the small government vision. Which is essentially that the founders had it right when they thought that mans inherent nature is to oppress his fellow man. Thus you have a government which is small: Or only as large as necessary. This is in contract to the left of course, which acts as if we are fundamentally good but something in our lives/upbringing messes that all up. And once we can stop messing that up all will be right.
For the reason that the left has a vision that I am against, I can totally understand Dr. Sowell’s reply. Because I don’t really hear Trump advocating for smaller government the way conservatives typically imagine it.
Does vote against Hillary mean that he will cast a vote for Trump? He doesn't say in this interview with that detestable punk Shapiro who is a dedicated NeverTrumper.
“Conservative” establishment purist who would rather go down with the Titanic gets a brief moment of half-assed “clarity”.
Donald Trump, to ally the fears and criticisms of many on the right, released a list of judges he would appoint. He did this for all the world to see and to scrutinize. Turns out his selections are top-notch as confirmed by the The Heritage Foundation and other conservative think tanks.
Crooked Hillary has not put forth a SINGLE judge she would nominate, and for good reason, because you can be sure they will be in the mold of Ginsberg, Sotomayor, and Kagan.
Thomas Sowell should be writing about his objection to the judges Donald Trump has put forward, not to some rediculous moral equivalency argument between Trump and Clinton. Irony is, that's usually his strong point ...attention to detail. Sadly, I've lost some measure of respect for Professor Sowell with this stand.
One of the best Conservative minds in the business. He realizes we simply cannot have that evil witch in the WH.
Trump has advocated for the reduction of federal government programs like Obamacare and Common core. He has wisely not taken the bait of entitlement reform, a loser for Reps who try to take the lead on this issue.
He did not say he would vote for Trump. He may go third party.
This is sort of like turning down a good meal because the cook only cooked it that way for "practical reasons" rather then writing a "philosophy of food" book.
