This will be my first and LAST vanity. I love this board and am so grateful to Jim for having created it. Although I do enjoy the conversations very much, i am here because I am a conservative, at least what conservative is supposed to mean, I think.
I wrote the following 19 years ago. Whats scary is that most of it is still relevant today.
I was ecstatic as i sat on the train and found that the NY Post had posted my editorial comment. I even yelled it out, which received strange glances!!
Id like to share it with you. I would be glad to mail a copy to the boss to prove its authenticity.
It is Sowell-like in that it jumps from issue to issue rather than focusing on one.
May 2, 1997 (I was only 29!..sigh)
A READER GETS A LOAD OF HIS CHEST
I must make the following comments about the political goings on around me.
Does channel 13 ever show any non-liberal programming? Why am I being taxed for this propaganda?
Does anybody know or care how many young children are dying from blood related diseases other than AIDS? Are adults, gay or otherwise, so selfish that theyd rather find a cure for a disease that - minus casual/gay sex and drug use - can be avoided, than to find a cure for the many children who suffer from these other debilitating diseases?
Doe anyone realize that the military exists to defend the country from foreign countries and that killing the soldiers from the other countries is the way they do it? Lets stop pushing ridiculous gender integration rules that undermine the lives and the morale of our soldiers
Why are people in public colleges when they cant even pass remedial math and english courses?
So president Clinton wants to rid the country of it European heritage. Working hard, making progress, loving our country and pushing education are all part of our European heritage and they should not be pushed aside by our president.
Trying to understand criminals is stupid. Making them understand punishment is not.
I don't like hearing about douches or condoms on television. Once upon a time, men and women would have been uncomfortable watching these commercials.
How to succeed: Go to school during the day, work at night, and stop complaining.
I am not against legal immigration, just supporting them when they get here and immediately go on welfare.
Women have great qualities and strengths that no man could ever possess,so why would they want to become more like men?
Homosexuals should be allowed to live in peace without fear of discrimination but they should not be allowed to adopt. A deviant lifestyle should not be spread to children.
Oh, I get it, its ok to pass a law against not wearing seatbelts, against not separating bottles from paper, against not having the right number of certain groups in your job or school, against school prayer, but passing laws about burning our flag and protecting our children (the unborn) are not ok. Hmm.
I dislike paying taxes for single mothers offspring, for the arts, for people on welfare who don't feel like working and for public employees who don't do any work. I hate paying taxes on a used, used, used car.
Vietnam was not a futile war. The result of our withdrawal was the direct or indirect killing of millions of people. And how dare Americans spit at their own soldiers? I guess the losers that did this thought that the lives of our soldiers and of the millions of asian women and children killed at the hands of communists were expendable in order to push a noble cause like communism.
Finally, Im a white male of European (Italian) descent. Im proud of that. I love this country and the Flag and all of the men who fought and died for it and Im proud to say it.
Thank you. I feel much better.
Exactly right. It's gotten so bad that one survey a year or so ago concluded that most people thought that 25% of our population was "gay."
You can't hardly watch anything on television without them putting some sort of "gay" thing into the show.
How did conservatives NOT BUY ONE STATION!!!! ONE!!!
Conservatives get into politics out of self defense. We don't want to be in politics, we want to live our lives and have people leave us alone. However, Liberals eat, live and breath politics, and they devote incredible amounts of their energy to furthering their political goals.
Conservatives don't want to own television stations, they just want television stations to be fair and balanced, not heavily biased. I guess we just kept hoping against hope that it would never get as bad as it has become.
Part of the bias is inherent. Broadcasting networks locate in big cities and the big city population pool leans heavily liberal. Their employees get hired from this pool.
But yeah, our big monied people should have been ruthlessly buying all network assets with an eye on forcing them to report both sides of the issues.
Who the HELL owned hollywood when they made Ben Hur and The Robe and The 10 Commandments?
Religious Jews who recognized that there was a need and a market for religion oriented movies. Decent people, far more worthy than what we have running the place now.
I just saw the Ben Hur remake last Saturday. I thought it was quite good.
What happened in the early sixties?
The baby boomers came of age. World War II had left the United States in the enviable position of being able to turn huge profits because the rest of the world's manufacturing infrastructure was shot.
That peace and prosperity encouraged a relaxing of constraints which eventually evolved into the debauched sixties.
Thanks man. Great explanation.
Makes sense.
We weren’t supposed to NEED politics. We had the constitution!!
GREAT!
BUMP!
i was 34....
amazing how they keep working the same angles ..... and we are so busy working to fund their destruction of America we don’t have time to find the pitchforks and light the torches....
maybe soon..
good job on the editorial..... maybe time for another? i enjoyed the read
I wrote one once to the local LA time affiliated rag.
It was about gun control.
They edited it a bit to make me really sound like a backwards slackjawed yokel hick.
It really ticked me off. No, they didn’t print my response.
I heard it said decades ago that a rich conservative will buy a professional hockey team while a rich liberal will buy a newspaper.
That’s REALLY wrong. Really wrong.
The NY Post, as I now know, is headed by a cheap labor guy.
But at least for 20 something years Murdoch gave us a paper that had SOME modicum of fairness.
The paper is a tabloid rag but the editorials were great, except when the neocons took it over.
THanks but I was much sharper then. Now it would read like a senile person wrote it :)
:) I felt it important to show I wasn’t a johnny come lately conservative just here for the ambience and fun crowd :) Though those ARE two big reasons :)
I was SO excited when i saw it printed.
I can’t imagine someone who gets a novel printed!!!
OR a BIG article in the front pages!!
Though I think we have some FReepers who are quite accomplished in those areas.
Curious about the early sixties? It was the cold war. Read none dare call it treason 25 years later. It will answer your question.
I’ve heard that name SEVERAL times. I will grab it on Kindle. Thanks!
You should try to submit it to the editorial board of the Post today and see what, if anything happens. Maybe even include a brief preface stating that this was originally “Posted” back in ‘97.
As some one said last evening, I believe on the live Trump rally thread,
‘this may be the first time that the new social media trumps the corrupt old guard media’.
Get the one with 25 years later in the title.
OK. Fiction or non fiction? Not that it matters. I like both.
Good stuff.
Since you mentioned Sowell, his book The Vision of the Anointed came out in the same general time frame (1996) as your letter. Like your letter, it is still very much applicable and operative today.
Non fiction. He revisits what he wrote 25 years earlier, kinda like you did.
Thakk you. I actually started to read books again thanks to FR.
I’ve been referred to “The Dark Forest” “None Dare Call it Treason” and now Sowell’s book from you.
Since I am going into all of them with no foreknowledge they should be quite entertaining.
Wow. Sounds great.
I just found this cleaning out the closet after stalling as long as possible :)
An interesting tidbit. I saw NOTHING suggesting white supremacy in my editorial, yet THREE different thinly veiled supremacist groups contacted me, 2 of them to talk at a function.
I declined.
